Get to Know Us: Lorena Merlo
|
|
My name is Lorena Merlo, but everyone calls me "Lore." This April, I am proud to announce that I will turn 40 years old. I consider myself very fortunate to have a supportive family. I am happily married and the mother of two beautiful children. They are one of my greatest blessings from God. All I can say is that I am very grateful to be around many incredible people in my life.
My life has always been full of changes, and God has guided me on different paths that only He knows the purpose. My life has not been exactly the easiest, but I can say that I consider myself a truly blessed person. When I was 32 weeks pregnant, I suffered paralysis, and, by God's mercy, I was able to complete my pregnancy and give birth to the most beautiful human being, my son Jay, my little miracle.
A few months after giving birth, in September 2008, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, a disease in which the body's immune system attacks the nervous system. In the process, it damages the nerve fibers and the fatty substance that surrounds them. Some of my symptoms are numbness, depression, worsening lazy eye, and sometimes difficulty speaking and moving my left leg. These symptoms are unpredictable. After my diagnosis, my life changed completely. The constant fear of parting and leaving my little guys behind was always on my mind. However, God gave me strength, and I learned that everything happens for a reason and that something better will come for me.
In October 2004, I joined the Carlos del Amo, P.A. team. I started working at Carlos del Amo, P.A., without having any knowledge in real estate transactions. My boss and my coworkers guided me and allowed me to prove that I could fulfill anything required of me. I gained knowledge and the skill in the real estate industry.
When I started at Carlos del Amo, P.A., I was completing my Bachelor's Degree in Social Work at Miami-Dade College. My passion has always been to help people in need. Over the past sixteen years, Del Amo Law has provided me with patient instruction to improve professionally. I am grateful to my boss, who has always encouraged me and made me feel like part of his family.
I consider myself a naturally curious person with the need to learn something new all the time. In 2010, while working for the family of Carlos del Amo, P.A., I took a medical assistant course. One of my many dreams was to study nursing. After my diagnosis, I wanted to learn more about the anatomy of human beings. I am currently finishing my major in Criminal Justice. I am doing so to show my children that there is no impediment in achieving goals and it is never too late to fulfill your dreams.

I am proud of the personal and professional goals I have achieved. I have learned that the best medicine for the soul is to have God in your heart. With Him, you will always have a reason to feel happy. My motto is always to give your best to others, and that will fill you with delight. I genuinely believe that a positive attitude always makes a difference. So never forget that all it takes is to be yourself.
I could take my last breath tomorrow, but I can say that I never stopped fighting for dreams. I have learned that you must be open to all opportunities. All I can say from the bottom of my heart is that I am very grateful for the opportunity to share what I love every day with the people I love under God's blessing.

Women’s History Month revolves around the International Women’s Day, celebrated since 1911 on the 8th of March. However, it wasn’t until 1977 that the UN General Assembly formalized the day, and two years later the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women is adopted.
This year’s theme for Women’s Day is “Women in Leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world”, with a campaign theme: #ChooseToChallege in order to call out gender bias and inequality. It is important to be informed and aware of the fight for equality; thus, we bring to you a selection of sources.

- March 1, 1781 - Formal ratification of the Articles of Confederation was announced by Congress. Under the Articles, Congress was the sole governing body of the new American national government, consisting of the 13 original states. The Articles remained in effect through the Revolutionary War until 1789, when the current U.S. Constitution was adopted
- March 3, 1913 - A women's suffrage march in Washington D.C. was attacked by angry onlookers while police stood by. The march occurred the day before Woodrow Wilson's inauguration. Many of the 5,000 women participating were spat upon and struck in the face as a near riot ensued. Secretary of War Henry Stimson then ordered soldiers from Fort Myer to restore order.
- March 5, 1868 - The U.S. Senate convened as a court to hear charges against President Andrew Johnson during impeachment proceedings. The House of Representatives had already voted to impeach the President. The vote followed bitter opposition by the Radical Republicans in Congress to Johnson's reconstruction policies in the South. However, the effort to remove him failed in the Senate by just one vote and he remained in office.
- March 11, 1918 - The 'Spanish' influenza first reached America as 107 soldiers become sick at Fort Riley, Kansas. One quarter of the U.S. population eventually became ill from the deadly virus, resulting in 500,000 deaths. The death toll worldwide approached 22 million by the end of 1920.
- March 17th - Celebrated as Saint Patrick's Day commemorating the patron saint of Ireland.
- March 22, 1972 - The Equal Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was passed by the U.S. Senate and then sent to the states for ratification. The ERA, as it became known, prohibited discrimination on the basis of gender, stating, "Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex," and that "the Congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article." Although 22 of the required 38 states quickly ratified the Amendment, opposition arose over concerns that women would be subject to the draft and combat duty, along with other legal concerns. The ERA eventually failed (by 3 states) to achieve ratification despite an extension of the deadline to June 1982.
- March 31, 1933 - The Civilian Conservation Corps, the CCC, was founded. Unemployed men and youths were organized into quasi-military formations and worked outdoors in national parks and forests.
