Emergency 911 centers act on inbound calls to see if people need their assistance. Our goals are the same — to help people in need!
In addition to monitoring alarms, we also monitor and act on high/low temperature alarms for residences, businesses, and agricultural accounts. These types of alarms help prevent loss of property and income, and to help our customers recognize an issue before costly damage occurs.
One call stands out in my mind. I received a heat detector alarm from a residence. It was around 9 p.m. and I spoke with an occupant at the residence. I told her we received a heat detector alarm for the garage. She told me they were about to go to bed, and she would check it. I heard her walking to the garage and open the door. There was a fire in her garage. I asked her, if she could safely do so, to get her family out of the house. The garage fire caused extensive damage. Thankfully, no one was hurt.
What really haunts me is that they were about to go to bed! If WHIRC wasn’t monitoring, what could have happened? I am proud of the work we do at WHIRC, and this is just one example of how we help our customers.”
