Celebrating the official launch of our new Medical-Legal Partnership with the Ypsilanti Health Center!

Michigan Advocacy Program is excited to announce the launch of our new Medical-Legal Partnership with the Ypsilanti Health Center. With generous funding from the University of Michigan Health Community Health Services, this program will help promote positive health outcomes in Washtenaw County through legal intervention.

Civil legal issues can develop or worsen when an individual faces other hardships in their life, including medical problems. While medical staff may be able to identify if their patients would benefit from services like legal assistance, they do not have the capacity to advocate for their patients in the other complex systems that impact their health and well-being.

Through our medical-legal partnership, an attorney is available on-site at the Health Center to meet with individuals and families who may need assistance with civil legal issues. By providing legal assistance to families at the health center, our legal staff can help to prevent civil legal issues such as eviction that could eventually contribute to detrimental health effects. Our legal intervention can also assist clients in accessing public benefits like Medicaid to ensure they can adequately treat their medical conditions. In addition, our advocates can help restore educational rights for children who have been suspended or expelled or face other barriers to special education accommodations.

In helping patients resolve their legal issues and educating medical staff on how to navigate legal barriers to health, the ultimate goal of this partnership is to break the cycle that keeps people in unhealthy circumstances which perpetuate chronic illnesses, exacerbate mental illness, increase rates of maternal and infant mortality, worsen outcomes for children with developmental disabilities, and augment the school-to-prison pipeline.

CVLAP Managing Attorney Emily Miller's favorite part of working at MAP is the people--and we couldn't agree more! Emily has been with MAP for nine years, and outside of work, she enjoys hanging out with her sci-fi book club and playing soccer with her kids.

Lisa Ruby, Public Benefits Attorney with MPLP has been with MAP for 31 years! Her favorite part about our work is the opportunity to effect change for the client communities we serve. Outside of work, she enjoys walking her dog with her wife, taking yoga classes, reading, and bird-watching.

MIRC Legal Assistant Emma Schuiling has been with MAP for less than a year. Her favorite part is the ability to work with community partners to collaborate and assist clients in the community. In her free time, she enjoys exercising, reading, checking out coffee shops, and spending time with friends and family.
