NEW YEAR, NEW POSSIBILITIES!

Dear Charting Careers Friends, Families, and Supporters:

In January, we celebrate National Mentoring Month! This month, and every month, we honor and highlight the critical importance of mentoring relationships. Through these trusting and supportive bonds, both mentor and mentee learn, grow, and gain new experiences.

For example, in December, we were able to take a group of mentors and mentees on a trip to Washington, DC to tour the U.S. Capitol Building. This was many scholars' first time experiencing riding the METRO and being inside these important buildings.

Additionally, in January, many mentors and mentees were out and about together. Here is a sampling of some of their activities:

- Going to the library for the first time to get a library card and working on a résumé

- Completing a scholarship application essay

- Working out together at Pip Moyer Rec Center

We are so thankful for our mentors who give of their time and talents and our scholars who are open to trying new things!

With best wishes,

Erin Snell, PhD

AWARDS DINNER-- A SHARED EXPERIENCE

Charting Careers staff and scholars enjoyed an inspiring evening together at the 35th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Awards Dinner. We congratulate all of the incredible honorees, the Dr. MLK, Jr. Awards Committee, and the Caucus of African American Leaders. A special shout out to mentor Vincent Moulden on his “Dream Keeper Award"!

At the event, scholars were also able to meet Congressman Bennie Thompson, Congressman John Sarbanes, AACPS Board of Education President Joanna Tobin, as well as spend some time with Delegate Shaneka Henson and Mayor Gavin Buckley.

NATIONAL MENTORING MONTH PROCLAMATIONS

We want to thank County Executive Steuart Pittman and Mayor Gavin Buckley for proclaiming January 2023 as National Mentoring Month in Anne Arundel County and Annapolis - a time to celebrate, elevate, and encourage mentoring!

MENTOR SPOTLIGHT

In honor of National Mentoring Month, we asked Dr. Debra Hardy-Cartwright why she became a mentor. This is what she said:

"I became a mentor because I would not be where I am today if it weren’t for the mentors in my life. I want to pay it forward. In addition, while working full-time as an OB-GYN physician, I appreciated the help I received from my husband and sister in raising two successful and independent daughters. Recently retired, I now have the opportunity and time to contribute to my community by being a part of the “village” that it takes to raise a happy, productive and successful child. There is no greater reward than the investment we make in our children."
