Dear Reader,

Writing this "fall into winter" newsletter, I mused, "Can this stuff actually help our enormous challenges and conflicts somehow?" Then your stories vividly reinspired me in the power of finding new possibilities in people, what's happening, what matters most, and ways forward.

And it's almost a new year!

So keep reading for coast-to-coast college life-design stories plus a toolkit and song (not mine :) to inspire your New Year reflections and resolutions. And a new event, thanks to you!

As always, find more at innovatorscompass.org, share, and share back your experiences!

To a new year and new possibilities,

New Year's Life Design Stories

I was thrilled to learn more about colleges coast-to-coast Compassing in their life-design courses, just as I led my own life-design workshop at Olin College.

Here, my students were giving and getting ideas on each other's experimental "asks"—an activity I learned from Smith!

A pair of stories from Smith College in MA:

From Patricia Woods and Manat Wooten (pictured) at the Lazarus Center for Career Development:

"We introduced the Innovators' Compass to first-year students during orientation to navigate choices about their academic focus, activities and projects, or potential career paths. We embedded further resources available for students to explore and reflect on their interests, build meaningful connections, and gain experience throughout their Smith education. By identifying what matters most to each student, we fostered a sense of belonging."

Jessica Bacal, Director, Reflective Practices, shared:

"I used the Innovator's Compass as a mid-semester check-in for our First Gen Out Loud community of first-year, first-generation college students. I asked how they typically solved problems, then had them look for their own processes on paper Compasses. Finally, students "Compassed" their own stuck points in their lives and paired up to talk. There was great energy in the room! "

And a pair from Stanford in CA (and beyond!):

Dustin Liu (under the "A" here), Lecturer and Fellow at the Stanford Life Design Lab (see their bestselling book Designing Your Life and other resources), wrote,

"We’re experimenting with using Innovators’ Compass to support students exploring how they can make an impact on campus. 'Designing Our Stanford' will launch next quarter as a core part of our course for first- and second-year students. We’re inspired by how Innovators' Compass offers an accessible tool for students to understand the power of design thinking.

And, as the Life Design Community grows to 1500+ trained educators across more than 400 universities, we continue to hear how the Innovators' Compass has been a powerful tool schools are using to support their students in the work of Life Design. As students gain exposure to these mindsets and practices, the Compass turns into a power tool that students can draw upon to get unstuck and move forward with more clarity and energy!"

YOUR stories move this work forward—please share them by email or tweet!
