Newcastle Chamber Update - March 27 2021
Community Events - Community Garden
This project is thanks to Evan King. Here are his words expressing why he decided to take on this project.
“The community garden idea came to fruition (pun intended) during the summer of 2020 when I was working in my own garden and seeing what was happening with COVID. I realized that not everyone is as lucky as I am where they can have a garden to work on and have fresh fruit and veggies. I strongly believe everyone should be able to grow their own food if they wish and as we have seen with COVID, our food systems can be fragile. Also, as our community grows and the living areas get smaller, the opportunities for home gardens get slimmer. So, with a little ambition and some great help from volunteers, this is turning into a reality.
The community has a lot to look forward to. We are starting to build the garden this year and hope to have the plots ready for spring. People will be able to rent a 3.5’ x 32’ plot for $75.00 annually to grow whatever fruit or veggies they wish. A bonus feature about the garden will be the fruit forest we are working on implementing. We are hoping to have a garden shed available with a small sitting area for people to rest while working on their garden.”
This community garden will be located beside the Community Centre and will be up and running this spring. Like any project there are costs involved in getting started. The garden can apply for assistance from the Municipality but cannot apply until December.
Any assistance you can provide is greatly appreciated. This will be a great benefit to our community. One of the benefits will be assistance to The Clarington Food Bank with donations of fresh produce.
Cheques can be made payable to Newcastle Community Garden and either mailed to or put in the drop box at 145 George Street E. Newcastle L1B1J

Covid Casualties
The toll this past year has taken on our lives is terribly sad. One of the tragic effects this time of isolation has had is the dramatic increase in child abuse.
An area that has had a significant increase is in infants, the most vulnerable among us. There is help available. Please if you or someone you know is having coping issues please seek help for yourself or others.
