Each month, we like to take a moment to share some of our favorite projects with our readers, giving you an inside look at the process of framing, meeting our designers, and the fun pieces of art that come through our shop. 

This months framer's Corner is brought to you by our Gallery Manager Heather S.

Heather has a degree in art history and has been a member of the Frame of Mind design team for 6 years now. We love her!

As you may know Frame of Mind is the hub for all Monte Dolack posters, limited edition and archival prints, lithographs as well as notecards. With that being said we have framed a lot of pieces by Dolack which are featured in our gallery, rotating throughout the year with other shows and artists. You can find his prints for sale in our gallery all year long and on our website.

This month's featured piece is the last signed Marilyn Monroe poster that was recently found amongst all the posters. Read below to hear all the details about this custom framing job by our gallery manager and design expert, Heather S.

This Marilyn Monroe piece has quite a few subtle details that do not stick out on their own. When Heather was choosing framing materials for this piece she wanted to bring out those details.

Let's get this piece ready to put into a frame.

This particular piece has a metallic finish, so it's best mounted by using a process called drymounting. Drymounting is when we adhere the art to a piece of acid-free foamcore using a built in adhesive that's heat activated to give the poster a very flat, finished and preserved look. Now let's look at the moulding choices.

There were a lot of choices for frames that would nicely compliment this artwork. We love to stack frames because it is a great way to really customize your framed piece of art. Joining two frames together can really enhance a piece and draw your eye to the places in the piece that the designer wants to showcase! Heather decided to use this design idea when designing for this.

Frame Choice

Heather chose a unique and beautiful combination of frames. The inside frame is a glitter rainbow frame that comes to us from one of our favorite suppliers, Bella Moulding. This frame makes the rainbow behind Marilyn really stand out. Before she added the rainbow frame the rainbow in the art seemed to just fade into the background. To soften the rainbow frame the stacking frame Heather chose is another frame brought to us from our distributor Bella Moulding and is a metallic silver finish with a blue undertone. This frame really continues the metallic finish of the print as well as the blue background. With the use of these two frames the background really comes alive and Marilyn just appears to pop out of the art work.

The final finishing touch to this piece is the Museum glass that was chosen. The Museum glass is 99% UV protectant and has museum qualities, non glare and extra clarity. The reason this glass was so important in the framing of this piece is the metallic finish of the poster. The non glare and clarity attributes of this glass allow the shiny finish to be seen and not create more glare.

Of the many works of art by Monte Dolack this piece of Marilyn Monroe titled "Monroe" was featured in the book Marilyn in Art which was published in Great Britain in 1984.
