As has become a recurring theme, there has been little to no discussion about how the students themselves figure into this. The money from this program will go to families; what rights do the students have to access this money and use it in ways they feel benefit them the most? Read the rest here

"If education is truly a right, then it must include the right to choose how one is educated. It must include youth voice and leadership, and must be created by them with adult support, not for them." Read here

AERO Community

One of the themes that has come up over and over recently is the need for the AERO community. It was also requested that we have a main place for people within the community to be able to connect, stay connected, share, and have discussions, etc. It's also a great way to invite new people into the community.

At the most recent AERO Rep meeting, it was decided to use the existing Facebook Group page to facilitate this for now. There are some ideas such as creating an App but for now we're going to use the Facebook group and see how it goes.

Community is more important than ever, and we're fortunate to have such a wonderful community.

AERO Needs Your Support

AERO has always been enabled by our community - and that's exactly how we want to keep it. We need your support to remain a free, independent voice for learner-directed education without being beholden to outside funders or institutions; we're turning to the people who matter most: you.

By becoming an AERO Sustainer, you help ensure that the work of AERO and all of you- the conferences, the resources, the connections, the newsletter, the movement, and much more — can continue for years to come.

Sustaining memberships start at just $5 per month, and every dollar makes a real difference. We encourage everyone who is able to consider $10 or more per month, and with each giving tier come perks as our way of saying thank you for being part of this.

This is an invitation to be a part of something you already believe in. If AERO has ever helped you in any way, or reminded you that another kind of education is possible, we need your support to continue this work.

Become a sustainer today here or make a one-time donation by going to the cart and putting the amount you'd like to donate

Peter Gray Discusses His New Book & More

Peter Gray, will be discussing his new book, Restoring Childhood: How to Set Kids Free in the Age of Anxiety, and more at the Macomber Center in Framingham, MA. See the event page here

Book for Pre-Med Application Process

Dear Peter,

I hope you're doing well! I'm excited to share that my new book, "From Pre-Med to MD: The Roadmap to Building a Competitive Medical School Application," is officially published on Amazon! This is my second collaboration with Dr. David Janiczek, a cardiothoracic anesthesiologist and former medical school admissions committee member.

This book is for any undergraduate student dreaming of a career in medicine. It covers everything from deciding if medicine is right for you, to sequentially what you can do in each of the four years, and how to set yourself up for success.

If you know a student who's interested in medicine, I'd love for you to share this with them. And if you do pick up a copy, a review would mean the world to me.

Thank you for your support!

Warmly,

Zakia Irfan

Co-creation of Education Aligned with Fundamental Rights

Dear AERO friends,

I am happy to share the outputs of an EU project "FutureEd" designed to empower us, stimulate civic reflection and actively participate in the co-creation of an education of tomorrow aligned with fundamental rights.

It encompasses 3 complementary guides:

1. Putting education to the test of rights

2. Benchmark practices in democratic schools

3. A comic strip on their digital rights for younger audiences

Zara in the Glowing Realm (mind the hallucinations!)

FutureEd has also been embodied in a series of public actions, collective reflections and complementary resources, presented in several formats, to bring to life the three pillars that the United Nations considers essential for human rights-based education:

(a) Participation and empowerment

(b) Non-discrimination, inclusion and equality

(c) Accountability, transparency and the rule of law

You can access all on this link: https://alliasbl.lu/en/projects/futureed/

Also available in French and German by switching the website language.

This all is just to show another way is possible and it's up to us to take new paths.

Any constructive criticism is welcome, so that we can do better next time or enrich the outputs.

All the best

Katy

Invitation to Start a Self -Sufficient Community

As covered in my IDEC session, I'm trying to start a self-sufficient community that would bring the experience of a democratic school to people of all ages, including adults. Once established, this community would run without money, instead dividing work hours between members, and would test a decision making model where each vote takes place after a trial period, a cross between direct and representative democracy. The community is currently in the planning stages, and I'm looking for anyone who might be interested in helping or even just discussing. If you know anyone, please point them my way.

If that's you, please reach out! ~ Amira ~ amira.ke@gmail.com
