Intervening for Marlin

Occasionally veterinary clinic staff will request Rescue services for Newfoundlands admitted to the clinic to be euthanized. Marlin’s veterinary clinic recognized that a different outcome might be possible and contacted NCA National Newfoundland Rescue to discuss options.

“I have a unique situation. A client brought a Newf to our animal hospital in poor condition, wanting to euthanize it. We would not euthanize since her main complaint was he had diarrhea and she had too many dogs. So we had her surrender him to us to save his life.  We have been caring for Marlin here while he recuperates. He now looks good, is the correct weight, has been neutered, is current on vaccinations and heartworm prevention. As you can imagine he is sweet and we all love him, but he needs a home and a place to run not to be kenneled in an animal hospital. I would appreciate any help or advice. Thank you.”

Marlin was quickly transferred to the Newfoundland Club of America Regional Club Rescue serving this area and is now settled in his new home.

NCA National Newfoundland Rescue is grateful to this clinic for Marlin’s care, a significant donation that will preserve funding for other Newfoundlands’ veterinary care.

Early Diagnostic Test For Hemangiosarcoma

Andrea Pires dos Santos, DVM, MSc, PhD, Purdue University

The team’s first aim was to validate the most promising miRNA markers, which they’ve accomplished. They will continue to refine their selections before moving on to aim 2, which

will involve looking for the selected miRNA in effusions (free fluid in body cavities) and blood samples

collected from dogs with hemangiosarcoma. The team already has several effusion samples collected and ready for this next step.

New Antibiotic for Ear Infections

Lindsey Citron, VMD, University of Pennsylvania,

Previous research showed that fosmidomycin, an antibiotic and antimalarial agent, is effective against Staphylococcus under laboratory conditions, and seems to be well tolerated in dogs. Using this information, the team conducted a clinical trial to assess the effectiveness and safety of fosmidomycin in client-owned dogs diagnosed with bacterial ear infections.

Genetics of Heart Disease in Newfoundlands

Vilma Yuzbasiyan-Gurkan, PhD, Michigan State University

The team recently obtained blood samples from a key sire and the team continues to obtain samples from well-characterized Newfoundland families with SAS. Findings will help advance our understanding of the genetic basis of SAS in the breed

and provide valuable clues to help other breeds affected by this life-limiting heart condition.

First Ever "Step Out For Health" raises awareness, needed funds.

Our first virtual walk-a-thon to support the Newfoundland Health Challenge was well received, with several Regional Club Teams taking part. 77 supporters raised almost $3000 by walking their Newfs and raising pledges from family and friends. The Newfoundland Club of Seattle was our highest earning club with over $1000 raised!

Quality of life management and decision making is a difficult transition for all families with beloved pets, this is a webinar shared through our partners at the Morris Animal Foundation that addresses these issues. We hope you find this presentation helpful as you navigate the pet aging process.
