Adjmi's first book-length fiction is a fast-paced coming-of-age story filled with drama and humor as seen through the eyes of a spit-fire teenage girl, Casey Cohen, in the 1970s. After Casey starts hanging out with the wrong crowd and gets into trouble in New Orleans, her family decides to relocate and return to their Orthodox Syrian Jewish community roots in Brooklyn. Immersed in an unfamiliar culture of weekly Shabbat dinners and extravagant events at the Museum of Natural History, the Marriage Box is a real place: a pool deck designated for girls to put themselves on display for potential husbands. Shocked but then enticed and looking to belong, Casey marries at age eighteen. However, she begins to question her decision when she learns that her new husband wants her to have a baby instead of going to college. This nuanced portrayal of Casey's journey from wild teen to married woman combines witty commentary and spunk as it depicts a young woman's conflicted desire to break free from a regimented life.
