College Counseling Updates - by Susan Carlson

Greetings from the College Counseling office!

As the weather gets cooler, the heat is rising for those
college_campus.jpg
students who are preparing to submit their first applications. While everyone who is making an early application has met with me, many multiple times, all is coming together for them in due time. For those students choosing to apply under the regular decision programs, they continue to assess their college choices, finalize their testing dates and are writing essays under my guidance diligently. No matter where your child stands in the process, our office is busy indeed.

As a reminder, when students submit their applications, whether through the Common Application, the UCAS system, the university's own application system, or even the Coalition Application, it's worth noting that the college counseling office is responsible for submitt ing the following supporting documents: the Newman transcript, any transfer transcripts if applicable, teacher recommendations, the school report, and the counselor statement. The College office is not responsible for submitting standardized test scores. Students must go to the testing agency directly (College Board, ACT, or TOEFL/IELTS) and order their scores to be sent to the colleges to which they are applying. NB: with a few acceptions, colleges will only accept official reports before rendering a decision. These reports often take up to 1 month to arrive at the colleges and processed in their system, so my best advice is to order the test reports to be sent at the time of application. If you have any questions about this, please don't hesitate to reach out to me at my email address, [email protected] .

Upcoming information session
NB: the financial aid program scheduled for Oct. 23rd at 4 pm has been changed to Oct. 30th at 4pm. Newman's  admissions officer from Clark University, Nick Porcello, will join me as we explain the financial aid process  and run through the terms you must be familiar with in order to understand how colleges make decisions on financial aid or merit based packages.

Please encourage your child to sign up and attend any of these visits if the school is of interest to them. It's a great way to learn more about it, while making a connection to the rep who will be the first reader of your child's application.

STANDARDIZED TESTING
Seniors! November and December are the last testing possibilities available to you that colleges will consider for regular decision deadlines of January 1 or 15.

Juniors! Please consider taking the December SAT or ACT to see how the test feels and learn what your strengths and/or weaknesses are. If you do poorly, you do not need to worry about the college seeing the scores. You have the choice as to what you submit to the colleges when it's time.

Below please find the registration deadlines for both the SAT and ACT.

ACT

International Students who are seniors
If you haven't taken a TOEFL or IELTS yet, please do so ASAP. While some colleges will waive this test under certain circumstances, most will request scores. These tests run quite frequently, however they book up fast. To set up your test date, please go to www.ets.org

If anybody has questions about whether you need to take or retake any standardized test, please reach out to me at
[email protected]

Birthdays
six_colored_candles.jpg
Each month  we recognize the names of the students celebrating a birthday that month. Each student receives a card and small gift. We celebrate the "sixth-month" birthdays of those students whose birthdays fall in June, July and August. This tradition is recognition of the importance of each individual life to our school community.
