A MESSAGE FROM ALL OF US TO ALL OF YOU

We appreciate that you choose to belong to our Y Family, to this special place of Community. Bringing people together for a shared, positive experience is the essence of our Y mission. That is why the current situation is so challenging.

We want to be here for you. We want to be here for our community. But, as a non-profit organization, we are reeling from these challenging times . Being forced to temporarily close our doors means an immediate and enormous loss of revenue the Y relies on to cover operating expenses.

As a special favor, we would greatly appreciate you maintaining your current membership with us. Your gift of continued membership will help us meet our immediate financial obligations. Plus, it will help us feel supported by our Y Family during this time of crisis.

We fully support the recommendations of our public officials and stand by our commitment to the health and safety of our members, staff, and greater community. However, we also want to continue to be here for you when things get better (and they will get better). To do that, we need your help now so we can continue to support our staff and their families, our community, as well as maintain our facilities and prepare for our next program sessions for when we do re-open.

To help ensure we'll be ready to continue to serve the needs of our Y Family and Community, we humbly ask you to make an online donation today to the Newport County YMCA's Community Support Fund. Truly, every little bit will help! www.newportymca.org/giving

We miss you all and cannot wait to see you when we reopen!
Thank you for being part of our Y Family

A message from Kim, "We can all come into community and shift our fears to love.  I believe in the power of collective consciousness and that by shifting this fearful energy we can come together to find the light in all of the chaos.  Be well all of you and I look forward to sharing online."

Fun Activities  To Do With The Kids

We are missing our Out of School Time kids! Until we can be together again, read below for simple ideas to keep skills sharp and have fun during this school break:
  • Read for pleasure. Whether your child is in the mood for the newest installment from his favorite series, or ready to experience a new author, this is the perfect opportunity to stash schoolbooks and read for fun. Gather in front of the fire (big kids too!) to take turns reading from classic tales.
  • Cook up an easy lesson. Invite your child into the kitchen to help you whip up a special dish - from fondu to potato pancakes. Those half-tablespoon and quarter-cup measurements are great practice with fractions.
  • Write thank-you notes. Penning notes of appreciation to gift-givers teaches gratitude while polishing writing and spelling skills.
  • Make the most of car rides. Turn the drive to and from any place into an opportunity to practice letters and numbers. You can look for license plates from different states, try to find the alphabet on the license plates, or count the number of red (or white or green) cars you see. For another take on this fun idea, you can have your kids play license plate bingo.
  • Maintain reasonable bedtimes. With no school to get up for in the morning, it can be tempting to let kids become night owls. A few days before school starts up again, ease back into the regular bedtime schedule so your child can start the year bright-eyed.
  • Ask for grocery list assistance. Have your child help choose what to buy, decide how much you need, check your supplies to see what you've already got, write or draw pictures on the list, and sort coupons.
  • Let kids help with online shopping. Need to do some online shopping? Log onto your favorite shopping sites and let your child help you select items. This helps children work on their computer and research skills.
  • Have a family game night. Chances are many of your family's favorite board and card games reinforce skills such as counting, reading, and drawing. Gather the group to play games you usually don't have time for on school nights. Source: Scholastic.com

Caring for your Mental Health

Caring for your Mental Health: Managing Anxiety & Stress

The CDC recommends taking important steps to ensure managing anxiety and stress during this uncertain time. Mental Health often suffers when individuals do not feel that they have a sense of control over their environment. Please take a moment to review what the CDC says about how to both recognize warning signs and the important things that you can do right now to help improve your mental health.

Stress during an infectious disease outbreak can include
  • Fear and worry about your own health and the health of your loved ones
  • Changes in sleep or eating patterns
  • Difficulty sleeping or concentrating
Things you can do to support yourself
  • Take breaks from watching, reading, or listening to news stories, including social media. Hearing about the pandemic repeatedly can be upsetting.
  • Take care of your body. Take deep breaths, stretch, or meditate. Try to eat healthy, well-balanced meals, exercise regularly, get plenty of sleep, and avoid alcohol and drugs.
  • Make time to unwind. Try to do some other activities you enjoy.
  • Connect with others. Talk with people you trust about your concerns and how you are feeling.
