Lunch, Literacy Panel Discussion "The Right to Read"

Join The Virginia Department of Education, Newport News Public Schools, and Newport News Public Libraries to watch segments of a documentary, "The Right to Read." Listen to experts and talk about how we can work together to advance literacy and reading locally and in Virginia.

Produced by Levar Burton, "The Right to Read" shares the stories of an NAACP activist, a teacher, and two American families who fight to provide our youngest generation with the most foundational indicator of life-long success: the ability to read.

The lunch and panel discussion will take place Wednesday, Nov. 1, from noon - 2 p.m. at An Achievable Dream Middle & High School, 5720 Marshall Ave. Please RSVP by Oct. 27.

The discussion will be moderated by Mayor Phillip Jones. Panelists include:

  • Dr. Lisa Coons, Virginia Department of Education
  • Dr. Emily Solari, University of Virginia
  • Dr. Michelle Mitchell, Newport News Public Schools
  • Anita Jennings, Newport News Public Library
  • Ethel Francis, Greenwood Elementary

Special thanks to E3: Elevate Early Education for their partnership with reading and screening events across Virginia to raise awareness and move communities to literacy action.
