Enjoy Torggler Fine Arts Center Family Fun Day

The Mary M. Torggler Fine Arts Center, located on the campus of Christopher Newport University, offers fun, unique experiences for guests of all ages. From special events to classes and gallery talks, residents and visitors are invited to explore compelling ideas through the transformative lens of the visual arts.

 

Don’t miss the next Family Fun Day on Sat., April 29, at the Torggler from 1-4 p.m., which promises creative, free fun for the entire family. Plans include kid-friendly art activities, balloon creations, goody bags, demonstrations, and entertainment. While there, tour new exhibits – Russ Warren: If My Thought Dreams Could be Seen and A Graphic Journey: Prints by Pablo Picasso – the Tim Collins Collection.

NNPL Wins Two Awards from Virginia Public Library Directors Association

Newport News Public Library (NNPL) won two awards for Outstanding Adult Program for the We Stand for Justice program and Outstanding Website for www.library.nnva.gov (in the population category 50,000 – 199,999) at the Virginia Public Library Directors Association meeting last month.


The We Stand for Justice: A Salute to African American Heroes program is part of the Say It Loud Project, a multi-component project aimed at documenting the socio-political history of the Newport News Southeast Community. On February 11, 2023, a ceremony at the Main Street Library honored William Davis Butts, Oscar Pretlow, and Irma B. Thompson. The ceremony included the premiere of a documentary and the unveiling of the honorees’ photos, with a brief history of their contributions, on the Wall of Justice exhibit. The Wall of Justice exhibit was displayed in the Newport News City Hall during the month of February.


The Newport News Public Library website, www.library.nnva.gov, was recognized for outstanding design and user-friendly features. The site provides comprehensive information about facilities and services, with links to extensive digital resources. The site follows ADA best practices to provide access to all patrons.

This is your opportunity to learn how you can work with and help the nonprofits in your community, and how everyone benefits from these connections.


A panel discussion led by Angela York, executive director of THRIVE Peninsula; Adam Krininger, chair of United Way of the VA Peninsula’s Emerging Leaders Society; Liz Pasqualini, vice-president of Community Engagement Volunteer Hampton Roads; and Michele Hanson, Taproom/Events manager, Tradition Brewing Co.

 

The event will be held Tuesday, April 25, from 5 - 7 p.m. at Tradition Brewing Co., 700 Thimble Shoals Blvd. A $20 donation will get you into the event, a beverage, and a chance to win a membership to Tradition’s Copper and Grain Mug Club. Register today!
