On Wednesday, May 24, nearly 3,000 Newport News Public Schools students, staff, and families attended the “City of Champions” event at Todd Stadium. Hosted by the City of Newport News and NNPS, the event was intended to honor achievements in academics, arts, athletics, and leadership.
The “City of Champions” celebration included incredible performances by Newport News students. The Crimson Thunder drumline from Katherine Johnson Elementary School opened the event. They were followed by Hidenwood JamJoy and the Riverside Elementary Booming Bears, as well as the Hines Middle School Pep Band, and Menchville Orchestra, Jazz Band, and Chorus. The Heritage High School Marching Band closed the event, taking the field and bringing everyone to their feet.
Throughout the evening, Newport News City Council and School Board Members honored student and staff achievements this school year. Guests had the opportunity to learn about and cheer for those who have excelled in academics, sports, the arts, and instruction.
Newport News is a city built on breakthroughs, and incredible achievements are made daily in our public schools. We congratulate and honor the students and staff who make our city great!
