This summer, June 17 - Aug. 11, Newport News Public Library invites everyone to join the 2024 Summer Reading Challenge. Reading during the summer strengthens children’s academic skills and provides relaxation and enlightenment for all ages. During the challenge, participants log their reading minutes. Youth participants earn rewards for meeting the reading goals of 500 and 1,000 minutes. Youth who complete the challenge by reading 1,000 minutes are eligible for a prize drawing, with prizes awarded at each library branch in three age categories. Adult participants earn a reward at registration and when they meet the 1,000 minutes reading goal. Adults who log 125 minutes during any of the weeks of the challenge are eligible for weekly prize drawings, with one prize awarded at each library branch per week. Participants can use Beanstack, which is available online and as a phone app, to log their reading minutes, or they have an option to use a paper log.
Free kick-off events for adults with shaved ice and a silent disco will be held at the Main Street Library today, June 17, 5–7 p.m.; the Grissom Library on June 18, 5–7 p.m.; and the Pearl Bailey Library on June 20, noon–2 p.m. Weekly family entertainment, including magicians, a petting zoo, theater, and science programs, will take place at all of the library branches throughout the challenge. See the event calendar at nnpl.org for the complete list of entertainment, story times, STEM programs, craft classes, and programs for youth and adults.
