A NOTE FROM THE NURSE:

It's that time of the year! Illnesses are all on the rise! Please be sure to be diligent with handwashing and monitoring your child(ren) for symptoms of illness.

Here's a review of some guidelines:

  • for any fever (temp 100.4ºF and over), influenza, covid, pertussis or RSV: stay home for fevers (over 100.4ºF) and may return when temps are normal for 24 hours WITHOUT the use of fever reducing medications.
  • for strep: stay home on antibiotics for 24 hours and then may return to school as long as the fever requirements are met.
  • For vomiting: must be 24 hours without vomiting before returning to school.
  • For diarrhea: must be 24 hours without a diarrhea incident before returning to school.

Please consider the following:

Encourage good hand washing- The number one thing that most kids can do to limit their exposure to germs is to clean their hands thoroughly. Teach kids to wash hands before eating and after outdoor play. Also, be sure to stress the importance of washing hands after using the bathroom.

Talk to your child- about other ways to prevent the spread of germs while at home and at school.

Ask Yourself- Will my child's symptoms interfere with having a productive day of learning? Is there a risk of spreading my child’s illness to staff/peers? Asking yourself these questions may help when deciding whether your child is healthy enough to attend school.

Hydrate!- Keeping well hydrated is very important to stay and feel healthy. Please send a refillable water bottle with your child every day. (Cleaning this water bottle between uses is strongly encouraged).

If you send your child to school and the guidelines haven’t been met, you may expect a phone call to pick them up.

Please call Nurse Anna at 712-737-2274 if you have any questions about your child or these guidelines.

OCCS Class of 2025 Alumni Challenge:

We are excited to share that Orange City Christian School is making a renewed effort to reengage with our alumni community! As part of this initiative, we’ve sent out a special video challenge this week, created by our current 8th-grade class, to encourage our alumni to reconnect and get involved in our school’s mission.

Now, we need your help! To reach as many alumni as possible, we’re asking you to share this video with any OCCS alumni you know—family, friends, or former classmates. Your efforts will help us reconnect with our wider OCCS family and keep everyone informed about the exciting things happening here, including Project Engage, our building project to enhance the learning environment for current and future students.

How to Share:

  • Share the video via email or social media with OCCS alumni in your network.
  • Encourage them to join the fun challenge and reconnect with our school community.
  • Also encourage them to fill out our Alumni Form so we can stay in touch in the future.

Your help in spreading the word will make a huge difference as we work to engage our alumni and continue building a strong community dedicated to our mission.

Read a Million Words Challenge:

We’re thrilled to kick off our winter reading challenge - Read a Million Words Challenge - to inspire a love for reading and build stamina in our students!

Here's how you can support this initiative at home:

  1. Encourage Reading: Motivate your child to read regularly—during free time, after school, or before bed.
  2. Track Words Read: After your child finishes a book or a few books, submit the total number of words in the book(s) using this Google Form. You can use ARBookFinder.com or https://wordcounters.com/ to find the word count of a book. (If the word count isn’t listed, an estimate based on the number of pages is fine!)

Together, let’s celebrate our reading journey! Stay tuned as we display our growing word count each morning at school. Thank you for helping us reach 1,000,000 words!

School Hours:

Please do not have your children arrive at school before 8:00. We do not have supervision for them until that time. As a reminder, the first bell rings at 8:10 am. Students may go to their classrooms at this time.

Project Engage Fundraising:

Cash on hand- $2,135,883.18

Outstanding Pledges - $1,616,018.71

Total - $3,751,901.89

NICSTO Donations:

Northwest Iowa Christian School Tuition Organization (NICSTO) is receiving contributions to provide tuition assistance to those who qualify. Anyone who contributes will receive a 75% tax credit up to the total amount of Iowa income tax that he/she pays. For example, if you donate $2,000 to NICSTO, your state income tax liability will be reduced by $1500 while NICSTO uses your contribution to help qualified students attend a Christian school.

We use these funds to bridge some of the gap between ESAs and tuition. We also use these funds to help families (for instance a pastor family who moves into the area) who apply to our school after the ESA deadline. What a privilege to be able to use some of our state tax dollars for non-public education!

Our school still needs close to $235,000 before the end of the year. You may also donate non-cash items such as grain, stocks and securities. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Mr. Van Velzen at 712-348-6106 (NICSTO Treasurer) or Mr. Alons at 737-2274 or stop by the school office. The donation forms are also available here or on the school website under "Donate Now", "Support Us", then "NICSTO Contribution Form.
