✦ THIS Friday, May 8, 7PM
▶︎ RABBI FALICK WILL SPEAK:
"JEWISH LIFE IN AN ILLIBERAL AGE" - KEY INSIGHTS FROM TWO LEADING JEWISH VOICES
| | |
Rabbi Falick will present and discuss highlights from a recent episode of "Identity Crisis," a podcast produced by the Shalom Hartman Institute.
His talk will draw on the much-discussed conversation between Yehuda Kurtzer, president of the Institute and Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Atlantic.
Rabbi Falick will focus upon these issues that they addressed: the tension between Jewish flourishing and rising anxiety, the pressures facing liberal democracy from both the right and the left, and the enduring question of how Jews sustain both security and responsibility in an uncertain age.
At a moment of rapid change, this is an opportunity to reflect not only on where we stand, but on what it will take to shape the future.
The presentation is self-explanatory but those wishing to hear the podcast can find it at THIS LINK.

✦ Friday, May 15, 7PM
▶︎ RABBI FALICK WILL SPEAK:
THE MANY FACES OF ORTHODOX JEWRY
| | |
Rabbi Falick will explore the complex and often misunderstood world of Orthodox Jewry.
While commonly viewed as a single, unified tradition, Orthodox communities are in fact deeply diverse, ranging from ("ultra-Orthodox") Haredi and Hasidic groups that may seek separation from secular society, to Modern Orthodox communities that attempt to engage with it.
He will examine their shared foundations, their internal divisions, and the historical and ideological forces that have shaped them, including differing attitudes toward modernity, education, and Zionism.
The evening will offer a clearer understanding of how these communities developed, how they function today, and why they continue to evolve in such different directions.

THEATER KID:
A BROADWAY MEMOIR
BY JEFFREY SELLER
| | | |
We’re launching a pilot book discussion group and you're invited!
Our first selection—led by Elaine Fieldman—is:
THEATER KID: A BROADWAY MEMOIR (2025)
BY JEFFREY SELLER
This memoir follows the author's journey from growing up in Oak Park to becoming a self-made Broadway producer behind Rent, Avenue Q, and Hamilton. Along the way, he reflects on his family life, his Bar Mitzvah at Temple Israel, and his evolving outlook.
It’s an easy, engaging read—often funny, sometimes moving—and there’s plenty here for us to dig into together.
The book is available on Kindle as well as at Schuler Books and Book Beat (just be sure not to confuse it with a similarly titled book by Luiz Goncalves).
BRING A BROWN BAG DINNER ...
... and join other CHJ members to be part of this first conversation as we get the group off the ground.
Questions? Please contact Elaine Fieldman at efieldman4@gmail.com.
RSVP to Michele at the office at 248.477.1410 or office@chj-detroit.org.

-
Shifting Voices in Media: A look at recent changes involving high-profile figures—such as the conclusion ofThe Late Show with Stephen Colbert and shifts at CNN—and what they signal about media independence.
- The First Amendment Today: Can our legal frameworks effectively protect a wide range of viewpoints against the influence of large-scale private and government partnerships?
- The Future of Dissent: Discussing the importance of maintaining a news environment where diverse voices can be heard without fear of being silenced.
