▶︎ RABBI FALICK WILL SPEAK

IN HONOR OF SIMCHAT TORAH:

A VISIT TO THE "JEWISH BOOKSHELF"

As the Jewish world celebrates the Torah Reading cycle, we'll take a brief virtual visit to the "Jewish Bookshelf."

What are the key pieces of literature that every Jew should know about?

Who wrote them?

Which of them are the most inspiring?

Which of them are the weirdest?

In this brief presentation Rabbi Falick will share some texts from the massive collection of Jewish literature throughout the ages.

ACCENTUATE THE POSITIVE: HOLDING ON WHILE THE EARTH SHIFTS

On the eve of the election, we'll put politics aside—including worries about the outcome—and focus on what Jewish tradition and Humanistic thought can teach us about optimism.

Reflecting on the power of gratitude, nurturing relationships, engaging with our community, embracing loved ones, and pursuing our personal interests, we'll explore ways to "accentuate the positive," as the old song goes.

No matter what our political future might hold, we can find ways to celebrate and engage with life meaningfully.

PEOPLE'S WATER BOARD COALITION

The People's Water Board Coalition is advocating for the passage of three bills currently in the Michigan Legislature which would prevent water shutoffs for people unable to afford their water bills.

Those affected are living without water in their homes, both unhealthy and miserable. No one's basic needs can be met without water.

You can learn more about the proposals at this link:

JEWS FOR A SECULAR DEMOCRACY

JUDAISM, LGBTQ+ RIGHTS & RELIGIOUS FREEDOM

TUESDAY, OCT. 29, 7:30PM

ON ZOOM ... CLICK HERE TO REGISTER!

JFASD is excited to invite you to a timely and crucial webinar, "Judaism, LGBTQ+ Rights, and Religious Freedom."

Our distinguished panelists—Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum, a prominent human rights advocate and Senior Rabbi Emerita of Congregation Beit Simchat Torah, the world’s largest LGBTQ synagogue and John Hellman, drag performer and Pennsylvania community organizer and social justice activist —will discuss how true religious freedom supports the rights of all individuals, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Together, they will explore the role of Jewish values and religious freedom in combating LGBTQ+ discrimination and fostering a society that respects and protects the rights of all.

In this powerful conversation, we'll also delve into how government discrimination against LGBTQ+ individuals—through policy and legislation—violates the First Amendment's guarantee of religious freedom, with a special focus on the unique impact this has on Jewish LGBTQ+ individuals in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and the country at large.

Special thanks to grant sponsors:

The Jewish Women's Foundation of Greater Pittsburgh, underwritten by JWF Trustee Nancy Weissman, in memory of her beloved mother-in-law, JWF Trustee Jacquelin Wechsler.
