Hello to all of our Riverfront Playhouse Friends and Family,

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to thank all of those who are working tirelessly to help complete the new theatre at 1950 California Street in Downtown Redding.

Our contractor, Don Ajamian Construction, Inc., is nearing the completion of the changes and improvements to our building. We should have the keys within the next two weeks.

A dedicated core group of volunteers have been working long and hard to navigate our organization through this project. Special thanks to Larry Morgon for serving as our Building Committee Chair making sure the contractor and the Board of Directors are on the same page for choices and changes that needed to be made as we progressed. Larry, along with his wife, Diane, as well as several others have been painting, cleaning and have worked on many other needs.

A big shout out to Tom Taylor and the set building crew Mike Tuggle, Milt Clark and Gary Stucki who have been working overtime volunteering to help deconstruct the former theatre location as part of our lease termination. They could use some help if you are available to provide some unskilled labor. We need to vacate the building as soon as possible but must return it to pre-lease condition first. We could use some electrical removal help, too, if you are, or know someone skilled in that trade, please contact Tom Taylor at (530) 515-0494 for dates and times if you can help.

Also, thanks to John Mathena, Randy Smith, Greg Balkovek and Ray Stewart for providing labor and to Redding Rotary International for their contribution of materials for construction of the stage floor at the new theatre. It was a big undertaking and we greatly appreciate all they have done.

I especially want to thank Barbara Harrison, Ronda Alvey, Mary Forbes, Carol Skill and Patty Williams for all of their hard work in organizing and presenting the Night of Surprises fundraiser last month. It was a fun night of dinner, dancing and entertainment. A huge thank you to Win-River, who sponsored our event. Also, thank you to the always elegant Linda Bott, the fabulous Lou White and his Band and the ‘surprise’ guests including Riverfront's past president, Dan Kupsky, who flew here from Arizona to emcee our event, the award-winning Native American flutist Randy McGinnis and his lovely partner, Patty Bay and talented actors John Welsh and Don Tamblyn. Thanks to all who joined us, all who donated auction items and those who bid on the auction items. A good time was had by all.

Mark your calendar and buy your tickets for ‘Clue’ the Comedy opening on May 9, 2020 at 1950 California Street.

See you at the show!!!!

Based on the iconic 1985 Paramount movie which was inspired by the classic Hasbro board game,  Clue  is a hilarious farce-meets-murder mystery. The tale begins at a remote mansion, where six mysterious guests assemble for an unusual dinner party where murder and blackmail are on the menu. When their host turns up dead, they all become suspects. Led by the Wadsworth – the butler, Miss Scarlett, Professor Plum, Mrs. White, Mr. Green, Mrs. Peacock and Colonel Mustard race to find the killer as the body count stacks up.  Clue  is the comedy whodunit that will leave both cult-fans and newcomers in stitches as they try to figure out…WHO did it, WHERE, and with WHAT!

The Significance of Community Theatre
by Ronda Alvey
Community theatre enriches the lives of millions. According to the American Association of Community Theatre, community theatres involve more participants, present more performances of more productions and play to more people than any other performing art in the country. It enriches the lives of those who take an active part in it, as well as those in the community who benefit from the live theatre productions.

Below are a few comments from people whose lives were touched by their involvement in community theatre.

• "Community theatre builds community pride. Audiences are proud to identify talented performers as “my student,” “my teacher,” “my minister.” Attending community theater performances builds our sense of membership in our community."
- Harvey Tucker, Professor Texas A&M University

• " Community theatre is a team effort opportunity for people of all talents, skills and energy. It enriches the community – financially and artistically. Theatre is a wonderful leveler of people – background becomes a moot issue. Plumbers work with and act next to bank presidents, children, and occasionally dogs."
- JoAnne Nissen, Retired Vice President, MRA-The Management Association, Racine, WI

• "As a shy young child I did not feel a part of my group of peers. When I joined community theatre, I suddenly became a part of a group of people who accepted me and used my talents. I was able to grow and find my own way in the world. I am sensitive to this need in young people coming along, as well as talented adults. An active community theatre should be a part of any community which hopes to grow and prosper--in business as well as culture."
- John Kollock, Habersham [GA] Community Theatre

• "Community theater offers the best of every world. There are the creative aspects, the artistic aspects, the business aspects, the social and social services aspects, just a myriad of outlets for every soul who chooses to pursue this activity. It's been fun, challenging, frustrating, interesting, rewarding!"
Rae Cohen, Newport Theatre Arts Center, Newport Beach, CA

On a recent trip to a California Community Theatre Association conference in Pacifica, Darryll and I had the pleasure to share our hits and misses with other community theatre members from California. The experiences, challenges and triumphs are a common denominator with community theatres throughout the state. A few of the take-aways we got from the day –
• We are so fortunate to have a very generous community.
• We all celebrate the diversity of our theatre family and our community.
• Our volunteers are the heart of our theatre and we are blessed to have an all-volunteer organization.
• Being around for 40 years is pretty amazing!
