There’s been quite a bit of action going on at Riverfront the past couple of months.
Signups took place in early February for a Kyle Thurmond directed Peter Pan workshop for kids and young adults. Seventeen young actors have been coming to the theatre three days a week, eager to learn and perfect their acting skills, and will perform a virtual Peter Pan production that will stream online May 13-16. Kyle is fresh off the International Broadway Tour of Peter Pan and is back in Redding as the new CEO and Artistic Director of Kids Unlimited. He’s also known for his work with the Walt Disney Company playing the beloved Disney characters Peter Pan and Pete from the Disney movies Peter Pan and Pete’s Dragon. A week after Peter Pan signups, we had auditions for Songs for a New World, directed by Stephanie Hudson. The is first musical from Tony Award winner, Jason Robert Brown (Parade, Bridges of Madison County) This moving collection of powerful songs examines life, love and the choices that we make. Rehearsals have been going great and the sounds coming from the rehearsal room is astounding. The Songs for a New World cast members include Rashod Holmes, Rebecca Gilbert, Ryan Nemanic, Joanna Heneveld, Kelcy Swanstrum, Chris Glavan, Katie Narf and Spenser Deardorff. Riverfront Playhouse wishes to thank long-time volunteer, board member, board secretary and finance manager Karen Taylor for her dedicated service for many years. Her tireless efforts and attention to detail and her ability to wear many hats made things around the theatre easier for everyone. Karen will now be a board member emeritus and advisor. We wish you well, Karen, and hope for all the best in your next chapter. |

Riverfront Playhouse has so many people to thank for all the support and kindness. We look forward to celebrating the opening of the theatre with a gala to publicly thank those who have given so generously. Mike Madden, a longtime resident of Redding sponsored two gold seats in the theater. Phil and Nora Perry, friends of Riverfront also sponsored two gold seats. In addition, Mr. Madden and the Perry’s each recently made generous cash donations. These donations are especially appreciated and important during these difficult financial times. |

Redding West Rotary president Ryan Haedrich and club members presented a check representing their generous donation.

As part of the Redding West Rotary's Foothill High School Library Book Purchases program, Susan Whitaker presented the book, “Dutch Girl, Audrey Hepburn and World War II” by Robert Matzen. This book will be donated to Foothill High School’s library in Riverfront Playhouse’s name. What an honor!

Riverfront was one of several downtown businesses that participated in First Friday, Downtown Redding on March 5. The first Friday of each month, downtown businesses may choose to stay open until 8 pm (rain or shine) and encourage the community to park, walk, utilize DASH and visit and support downtown businesses and see the downtown revitalization unfold. More than 60 visitors come through Riverfront’s doors and were given tours and refreshments. It was a lot of fun to show off the theatre and share the excitement of what’s in store. |

The board of directors recently completed the first part of a two-part planning session. It was successful in identifying our internal strengths and some of the challenges we face both as a result of COVID interruption and developing administrative procedures for our new facility. Prior to the planning session, all board members were asked to take a survey, and from that, a word cloud emerged with Riverfront’s priorities. The survey confirmed that a significant part of the theatre is Community. (see word cloud on right) ↗️

If you haven’t had a chance to pick up the March issue of Enjoy Magazine, get it before it's gone. Writer Jon Lewis did a Q&A with longtime Redding actors Pamela Carney and Kathryn Kirk. The final question of the article, “What value does theater add to the community?” KATHRYN: “Theater brings people together from all walks of life. Theater doesn’t care what color you are, what your political beliefs are or how much you make. Working together to create a production of the highest caliber and offering it up to an audience creates community. PAMELA: “It adds a richness of culture, and we can always use more culture.” We look forward to bringing people together soon.
