Unleashing Economic Growth Potential in the Western Balkans
On May 14 the World Bank hosted a high-profile event in Vienna on barriers and disincentives for women’s access to economic opportunities in the Western Balkans. "Obstacles keep women out of the labor market or from good jobs", said Linda Van Gelder, World Bank Country Director for the Western Balkans, " but legal and institutional changes can move us in the right direction, and can start moving the needle in changing attitudes and perceptions about the role of women." Gender Disparities in Mongolia’s Labor Market

This new World Bank qualitative study looks at constraints underlying gender disparities in Mongolia and provides policy recommendations to address them. The report launch was covered by 30 media outlets, including 11 TV channels, newspapers and online news websites. Links and full media coverage available:


How can we ensure women receive adequate health care as they age?
Women have a longer life expectancy than men. Because of this, they are more likely to suffer from illness or disability related to aging for longer periods. Socio-economic barriers can also affect negatively women's health by restricting access to needed health services. An ongoing UFGE-funded study looks at two aspects of aging and elderly care from a gender-based perspective.

Promoting Male Engagement in Maternal and Reproductive Health in Rwanda
This recent study shows that a gender-transformative intervention can positively affect various health and gender-related behavioral outcomes. The study examines the impact of a counselling program for new and soon to be father’s and their partners/spouses in Rwanda that resulted in a halving of women’s reports of violence a year and a half after the intervention concluded.

Celebrating Africa's female athletes of tomorrow
Sports can play a powerful role in empowering women. In Tanzania, the Africa GIL is working with Grassroot Soccer to evaluate an intervention that provides girls and boys with information on sexual and reproductive health (SRH) through soccer clubs. 

Podcast
The Africa GIL discussed the impact of skills development on adolescent girls in Uganda and Liberia, in a podcast hosted by RTI International. In Uganda, a program that simultaneously provided livelihoods training to run small-scale enterprises, and education on health and risky behaviors had strong positive impacts on economic, health and agency outcomes for adolescent girls.

Why care about unpaid care work in East Asia?
Recent studies show that the need to balance market work with unpaid domestic work can contribute to lower female labor force participation. Policy reforms which aim to alleviate the domestic work burden on women could help promote equitable economic opportunities, for example by providing affordable childcare options.

Women-Owned Enterprises in Vietnam: Perceptions and Potential
This study looks at the specific financial and non-financial needs and opportunities for women-owned SMEs in Vietnam. It quantifies the market opportunity for banks to target these SMEs with strategies that recognize the number of such businesses, annual revenues generated, number of employees, and contribution to the economy.

A Toolkit of Actions and Strategies for Oil, Gas, and Mining Companies


IFC has recently launched a toolkit for oil, gas, and mining industries. The toolkit provides practical, detailed tools to help companies assess and address barriers to gender equality and inclusion in the workplace, across the supply chain, and in community engagement and investment.
