Basketball Update
On January 31st, the SVA Varsity Boys basketball team defeated Ivanhoe 39-13. In the second half, the team pulled away following a 20-11 lead at the break. Zephaniah Serna led all scorers in the game with 18 points, and Garreth Jewell delivered 12 assists from the point guard position. SVA out rebounded Ivanhoe by 17 rebounds, and the team's 2-3 defense shut down Ivanhoe's inside game. Coach Bennett awarded the Player of the Game to Jewell. The team has a tough away game at CVC forthcoming, but Coach Bennett said that the team is mentally prepared for the difficult challenge.
Earlier in the year, the team lost a nail biter at home to Three Rivers by a score of 38-29. Zephaniah Serna, Liam Gair, and Kylie Lara each led the team with 8 points. AJ Dosier led the team with 8 rebounds, and Garreth Jewell led the team with 8 assists. SVA was down by 12 points at the half, but the effort in the second half was applauded by Coach Bennett, as the team turned up their defensive effort and narrowed the gap. Coach Bennett awarded the Player of the Game to Serna, and was feeling positive about the level of teamwork demonstrated throughout the game.

In the season opener against Three Rivers, the SVA Varsity Girls team delivered a victory. The game saw several lead changes, but SVA was able to triumph 16-14, and the Lady Explorers held on to the lead in the final minute by running out the clock. Cadence Spencer led the way with 8 points and Sierra Gleaton contributed 4 points in a highly competitive game. Claire Johnson hit an outside jump shot for her first two points of what looks like a very promising career. This was the second consecutive "down to the wire" victory for the Lady Explorers over Three Rivers, and next year they will be looking for the trifecta.
In their second game at home this season, the Lady Explorers showed an impressive level of skill by dominating Ivanhoe 40-4. Coaches Yado & Bennett had the girls ready to play, and they demonstrated an amazing work ethic right out of the gate. "Anytime you hold a team to two baskets, you are playing amazing defense. The entire team never quit, and their strong practices are leading to excellent results" stated Coach Bennett. "I love the fire and enthusiasm of the Varsity team, it really couldn't be any better on game day" said Coach Yado after the game. Cadence Spencer led the team with 20 points, and Sierra Gleaton and Sophia Rasner had several baskets and put in a very strong performance. Next up, a tough match on the road at CVC.
