Charter Update

Things are moving forward and in a positive direction as we prepare to open our new school this fall. Superintendent Dutton, Board Chair Berglund and Board Vice Chair Rollin met with VUSD CFO Nathan Hernandez this week to discuss facility use agreements for both SVA and BOA. The meeting went well and we expect to be able to make an announcement about the future of our facilities in the coming weeks. Stay tuned.

Admissions Window is Now Open!

Please spread the word about our excellent schools! Forward this email or print and share the  one-page application with anyone who may be interested in enrolling at SVA or BOA. You can also print and share our poster shown below!

Thanks for your support!

Be an Ambassador for The Academies

Think your school is doing great things? Put the word on the street! Be an Ambassador for The Academies.
  • Parent and student voices are the most powerful voice to spread the word about our schools -85% of respondents to our Interest Form stated that they heard about us from friends or family.
How can you help spread the word? Here are 5 things you can do over the winter break:
  • Start a conversation
    •  at a holiday party, at church, at the park, at the post office!
    • "Sally is doing great! She loves her teacher and her school is great because..."
  • Read our Fast Facts so you will be prepared to answer common questions
  • Print our one page application and carry it with you to give to all of those folks you speak with.
  • Forward our News & Notes emails to friends who might be interested
  • Share, post, re-post, tweet, and re-tweet your little heart out. Look for some great shareable FB posts coming soon!
Want to do more? Contact us to become part of our Ambassadors Street Team! We have several outreach events scheduled in the coming months and would love to have more parent ambassadors attend to share their experiences. Spanish speaking families are especially encouraged to join us at these events!
Tomato Garden Fundraiser

Spring is coming and our tomato garden fundraiser is here!
January 17-February 3

Please ask family and friends to consider purchasing a tomato garden or purchasing one as a donation to our SVA garden or another community garden. PTO will make arrangements for all donated plants to be planted!

Each tomato garden sells for $15 and our PTO will receive $8 from each garden purchased!
The money raised will go toward field trips, technology and other projects that directly benefit our students.
Tomato Gardens will be delivered in mid-March
For more information about this local fundraise, including planting tips for your Tomato Garden, visit the Gardens4Education website.

Contact Cristina Johnson for more info or to help distribute Tomato Gardens in March.

Parent Support

Welcome to our new Parent Support section.  To help achieve the intended outcome for families articulated in our Strategic Plan, we will be offering a series of informational resources  to help support you in the often challenging, yet infinitely rewarding task of parenting.
High School Prep!

Our middle school students listened intently as VUSD representatives spoke to them about the rigors and requirements of high school on Tuesday morning.

These wide-eyed youngsters learned that they will soon be considered young adults and will take on greater responsibility for their education than ever before.

Presenters went over requirements for high school graduation and for preparation for entry into universities in the UC and CSU systems upon graduation. District staff also spoke to students about the importance of maintaining good study habits and told them about resources available to students at District high schools.

Parents, ask your middle school student about what they learned. Do they have concerns about academic and social pressures of high school? Do they see a connection between the Habits of a Scholar they are developing here and their future as a young adult in high school? How will these Habits help them face the challenge and rigor of high school?

Children's Art Classes

Arts Visalia, a local nonprofit organization, is holding children's art classes this spring.

Arts Visalia offers classes for both adults and children in their on-site classroom. Classes are designed for both beginners and more advanced students to explore their creativity, expand their technical skills and learn at their own pace. Small class sizes provide a hands-on experience that encourages artistic engagement with instructors and fellow students.

To enroll your child, please fill out the enrollment form and return it to Arts Visalia. Class sizes are limited with enrollment on a first-come first-served basis. To guarantee a place in a class, tuition must be paid at the time of enrollment.
