Spring PBL

Fifth and sixth grades hosted their A-maze-ing Rat Race PBL event Tuesday. Students engineered mazes for classroom rats (Coca & Cola, Honey Nut & Cheerio, and Lily & Mabel), collected and analyzed data, made revisions, and continued to refine their work before presenting to the public this week.

The guiding question.

Collecting data.

Data Analysis. These graphs show maze completion data aggregated for both rat's times and disaggregated by individual rat.

Sweet rewards.

Track & Field Season
There are two track meets scheduled later this month:CVC 3/21 and Sequoia Union 3/31. Grades 5-8 may attend meets, serious 4th graders are welcome at practices.  Practice began this week. A signed Athlete Contract is required for every participant. See contract for more information, including the practice schedule.

Lost and Found

With chilly mornings and warm afternoons, those jackets and sweaters are beginning to pile up! Please remind your students to be responsible for their belongings at school. Be sure to check the lost and found racks when you are on campus for your conferences next week!

Items left behind will be donated to Visalia Rescue Mission at the end of the day on Friday, March 10.

Excellence or Bust

Each year, Sycamore Valley Academy hosts  Excellence   or   Bust , an event exclusively for local leaders in the education community. This event  gives the community a chance to see what Sycamore Valley Academy believes and does, and to share resources and tools to make these excellent principles and practices accessible to local educators.

Superintendent Dutton will present on The Academies program and practices, then guests will select from a menu of lessons to observe in classrooms.

Basketball - Final Season Update & Statistics

In the final game against Sequoia Union, the Explorers pulled off a 29-28 victory on the road. After losing to the Cougars by one point in overtime at home, the rematch game did not disappoint the fans. Coming into the game, Sequoia Union had only lost one game all season. The Explorers were 0-3 on the road, so on paper, it looked like an easy win for the Cougars. But the Explorers took the early lead and held on the entire contest. "Today, the team finished the season as winners; in attitude, in sportsmanship, and on the court. Garreth Jewell had his best game as a point guard in two years  to finish his SVA career, and he really controlled the tempo of the game" said coach Bennett. Zephaniah Serna led all scorers in the contest with 16 points. "I love this team, and I am sad to finish the season this year. We became a basketball family, and I hope that we stay connected in the years to come" said coach Bennett. The team finishes with a 4-5 record, 3-1 in their last four games.

In the final game against Sequoia Union, the Lady Explorers pulled off a 19-18 victory on the road. This was the second straight victory for the girls over the Cougars. Brenna  Mathews was all over the court stealing the Cougars passes. She finished the game with 15 steals, which is an SVA record. Cadence Spencer and Sofia Rasner fought tough battles on the inside as the Cougars brought an aggressive style to their inside play. Sierra Gleaton finishes her SVA career as the all time leader in assists. "Our Lady Explorers have been complimented by several opposing teams as having the highest level of sportsmanship in the league. Not only have they played outstanding basketball all season long, they have done so with a great attitude, professionalism, and unselfishness. Our entire school is very proud of them" said Coach Yado. The team finishes with a 5-4 record on the season, which is the best record ever by an SVA team.

Children's Art Classes

Arts Visalia, a local nonprofit organization, is holding children's art classes this spring.

Arts Visalia offers classes for both adults and children in their on-site classroom. Classes are designed for both beginners and more advanced students to explore their creativity, expand their technical skills and learn at their own pace. Small class sizes provide a hands-on experience that encourages artistic engagement with instructors and fellow students.

To enroll your child, please fill out the enrollment form and return it to Arts Visalia. Class sizes are limited with enrollment on a first-come first-served basis. To guarantee a place in a class, tuition must be paid at the time of enrollment.
