Week 3 - March 26, 2021
Producer's Corner
Gale Batchelder & Donna Ferullo, Spring Co-Producers
Welcome to Week 3!

Wow, Annie's gorgeous voice last week! What an engaging performer, and what a treat to hear her.

Because we know you never tire of learning, and we never tire of teaching, this week we will offer instruction in making video recordings for performance including the final performance group videos. Anyone interested can stay after rehearsal for this how-to class.

Thank you for reading the ENTIRE News & Notes, especially Nick's Notes!

Season Co-Producer
Nick's Notes
From Nick Page, Mystic Chorale Founder & Music Director
Annie Patterson and Peter Blood were a joy this last week.  They generously offered a free copy of their new Pete Seeger songbook to anyone who purchased one of the songbooks (Rise Up Singing & Rise Again).  Info at

Those interested in recording some harmony overdubs or a solo verse to their song “We Need Truth,” please contact me at
Our guest this week, Reggie Harris has been performing his songs and working for justice for over forty years, most of that time with his wife Kim.  He has recorded a great variety of albums ranging from the songs of Phil Ochs to songs connecting his own African American experience with songs from Jewish traditions.  He is best known for his own songs.  He will share his new song ON SOLID GROUND and we will be making a video, overdubbing his performance of IN THE SHELTER OF EACH OTHER.   The lyrics, PDF files and practice videos of these songs  are on our website. The more you learn the songs ahead of time, the more you will enjoy singing along.
I am putting together an impressive list of singers for our April 20 Homegrown Night.  It will be members of the Mystic community including some alumni like the great Louise Grasmere. If you have created an original song or parody, let me know at  Don’t be shy.  If you don’t have accompaniment, you can sing a cappella.
Some have asked why I don’t provide ALL the scores and lyrics as PDF files.  I have only given the PDF files when the guests have given me permission to do so.  For example, I have always honored Ysaye Barnwell’s wish that her arrangements remain in the oral tradition, not written down.
Songs for this week & new material on the website:

This Tuesday we will review Sally Roger’s songs CIRCLE OF THE SUN and IN THE NAME OF ALL OUR CHILDREN that she will be singing with us on April 6th.  She’s already given me her playlist – all wonderful songs. Lovely AgnesIn the Name of All of Our ChildrenLove Call Me Home by Peggy Seeger, One I Love by Jean Ritchie, Gonna Plant Me a Garden, Crossing the Bar by Rani Arbo/Tennyson, Circle of the Sun, Now is the Time,  P is for Peace, Henry Box Brown, We Will Build This House, and No Time to Feel Hopeless.
We will also continue to learn Woyaya.  If I go too fast, you can go to the members section of our website and practice the songs ahead of time.  You’ll be more confident singing along, particularly when we go into four part harmony.  All the songs that use harmony are on the website, videos with the words and your part being sung.
I will introduce the chorus to Joey Weisenberg’s Lincoln Nigun.  This is the “L’Cha Dodi” section.  The video online will help you learn it in advance.  We will learn Linda Hirschhorn’s Amazed (music and video online), and the South African prayer, Ukuthula (PDF and video online).
I have added more lyrics and videos to the website including the song Ayúdame A Mirar (Help Me to See) that Sol y Canto will be leading May 11th as well as Melanie DeMore’s One Foot/Lead With Love.
Schedule change: I am switching the NAME THAT TUNE game to the end of the May 18th session (instead of May 11th).  The activity where we create new verses to This Land Is Your Land will be at the end of the May 11threhearsal.
I am asking everyone to contribute to one or both of our two videos.  For Ysaye Barnwell’s arrangement of “Soon Ah Will Be Done” I will be accepting video and audio only but for Reggie Harris’s “In The Shelter of Each Other” I’m asking those who cannot submit video or audio recordings to submit photos of themselves, photos that represent the words to “In The Shelter Of Each Other.”  Info coming Tuesday.
In addition to these two videos, we will be recording our guests. They have given us permission to create videos where members of the chorus overdub harmonies or, in some cases, sing solos.  If you are up for this additional challenge please contact me at
A huge thanks again to Idajean Fisher and the Mystic Jamulus team.  They have put in many hours outside of our sessions.

This week's "Tech Tip"
Improving our online experience, one step at a time!

Each week, we record our sessions so you can watch later. This is helpful if you miss a session or want to see something again.

Starting this week, you will see a "Recording Disclaimer" from Zoom when you join the meeting. You will be given the option to continue or leave. By clicking "continue," you are giving your consent to being recorded.

If you wish to stay in the meeting, but do not wish to have your image captured in the recording, you can click "stop video," which will turn off your video in the meeting.

This is the message you will see:
Do you have a Tech Tip to Share?
Please email Linda to include your tips in an upcoming News & Notes!
