WEA Legislative Reception
Last night state legislators spoke to a packed house at the McMenamin's in Wilsonville. The topics ranged from the semiconductor task force to the long-term planning around infrastructure, including the Willamette Water Supply project to healthcare. The 2023 Legislative session is upon us. If you are a WEA member and want to keep up with what's happening in Salem, connect with our Government Relations committee.
Thanks to our presenting sponsor, Legacy Health, a locally owned, nonprofit health system with one mission: to bring good health to our communities. Legacy Health's integrated network of clinics and hospitals covers the Willamette Valley from Silverton to Southwest Washington and everything in between. Services include dozens of primary care clinics and urgent care centers, six hospitals, including a dedicated children’s hospital. Legacy also works in partnership with non-profit community organizations to address the most pressing public health needs in our communities including access to care and addressing social determinants of health, such as housing and food stability.
Thanks to Senate President Wagner, Senators Sollman and Lieberman and Representative Pham, Reynolds, Bowman and Helm for joining WEA for an engaging conversation.

LCDC to Receive CFEC Update, January 26 Meeting
|
The Land Conservation and Development Commission will receive an update on the Climate-Friendly and Equitable Communities (CFEC) program at its January 26 meeting. Meeting materials are now available on DLCD's web site. Public testimony will be taken during the CFEC agenda item, currently scheduled for January 26 at 4 pm.
The staff report discusses the potential for minor technical corrections and clarifications to the rules. Should the commission decide to initiate that work, staff expect to solicit ideas and input from the public.
The staff report also covers exemptions for small-population cities and approved alternative dates for compliance. WEA had the opportunity to hear from staff from the Department of Land Conservation and Development in late 2022. If you would like more information on that presentation, contact WEA Executive Director Elizabeth Mazzara Myers.

Update on Interstate Bridge Replacement Program
The bridge that connects North Portland with Vancouver, Washington is known as the "only stoplight" on Interstate 5 from Canada to Mexico. It is a critical transportation asset that allows freight, commuters and visitors to move freely up and down the West coast. The first bridge opened to traffic in 1917 and the last major update, including opening the second bridge, was in 1958.
In 2022 WEA had the opportunity of a first update with the Program Administrator Johnson and Representative McLain. We have invited them back to hear how the program is progressing and what we can expect from Salem this session. Featuring Transportation Committee Co-Chair Rep. Susan McLain, Interstate Bridge Replacement Program Administrator, Greg Johnson and announcing Senator Lew Frederick who sits on the critical Bi-State Bridge Committee.

On January 10, the City of Sherwood announced that $3 million in federal funding has been designated toward the improvement of a major new public roadway in the Tonquin Employment Area of Sherwood as part of the FY23 Federal Budget. These funds will go toward construction of Ice Age Drive, a key roadway that will enable access to several industrial parks currently under construction in the city.
Economic Development is one of the highest priorities of the Sherwood City Council as they work to grow new jobs and a stronger, more diversified tax base in Sherwood. "Economic growth in Sherwood is intended to complement and align with our amazing family-oriented small-town community and create more opportunities for people to live and work in Sherwood,” said Sherwood Mayor Tim Rosener.
Ice Age Drive is a planned approximately one-mile east/west industrial collector road between SW Oregon Street and SW 124th Avenue in Sherwood which will help ease traffic flow on SW Tualatin-Sherwood Road, improve access to I-5, and make it easier for additional tech and advanced manufacturing companies to locate in Sherwood’s Tonquin Employment Area.
