OCTOBER THEMES

Heritage

Immigration

ARTIST: Shirley Storms

ARTIST STATEMENT: I started at WES the same year I started exploring multi media art, 2007. Before that I was a fiber artist, and a school teacher.

Many kinds of materials not usually thought of as art materials are fun to play with. I love to recycle and repurpose found things and combine them with other more familiar pieces. The labyrinth in this piece is made from broken car windshield glass I scraped up off the street. It was the first time I ever used it, but not the last. Most of my art has a story, a humanistic point, or at least a bit of whimsey. In this one I was thinking of the rainbow of people needing to find new homes, the difficult journey each one must take, and my wish for how they will be helped through their desperate time.

Creating a Caring Culture

In the WES Social Hall

The WES Community Relations Committee (CRC) & Lifelong Learning (LLL) present a series where we'll confront harmful power systems that show up in ourselves, our community, and society in general and aim to disconnect people. We'll explore how we can change our thinking and behavior to form more cooperative and collaborative ways to engage with each other.

WES & Lutheran Social Services Join Together for a Winter Coat Drive -- Now through November 19

The WES Immigration Justice Team invites you to the 2023 WES Refugee Coat Drive! This year we are again partnering with Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area (LSSNCA). We request donations of all sizes of new or gently-used winter coats for local refugee children and adults. They are needed by the families who are currently being resettled permanently in the D.C. area by the Lutheran refugee resettlement agency.

Please deposit your donations in the large cardboard box in the WES cloakroom area. For questions or receipt for tax deduction purposes, please contact Katherine O'Kester with a listing your garments, sizes, and colors, along with the date you dropped them off.
