VALERIESLIST SPONSORS

On Saturday, March 25, 2017 we are celebrating the 13th annual San Diego Race for Autism in Balboa Park, and it's going to be "Super!"

This family friendly event gathers together more than 6,000 families, educators, and autism professionals from across Southern California to help raise awareness and funding for one of our country's largest concerns- autism. Once considered rare, autism now affects as many as 1 in 68 children in the US, and more than 19,000 families right here in our community.

100% of the Race funds stay right here in San Diego and provide funding for early identification efforts, technical training in software testing for young adults, parent programs, educational workshops and has funded more than 600 community programs and classrooms, benefiting thousands of local children and families.

Want to learn more about Relationship Development Intervention (RDI) for your child on the spectrum?

Relationship Development Intervention (RDIĀ®) is a unique treatment approach that empowers parents to guide their child to succeed in a truly dynamic world. Children who learn to actively engage with the support of their parents in safe but challenging learning opportunities (problems and situations that are just beyond their level of competence), develop a strong motivation to explore and expand their world, as well as develop competence and trust in themselves and their Guides. The program has no defined length. It is designed to accommodate parents and children with a wide range of obstacles and handicapping conditions. Therefore participation may range anywhere from one to several years. Have specific questions? See the RDI FAQs for answers!

  • Adults with autism see interests as strengths, career paths
  • Adults on the autism spectrum see their interests as possible fields of study and career paths, as well as ways to mitigate anxiety, finds a study by NYU's Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development.

The findings, published in the journal Occupational Therapy in Mental Health, continue a shift away from perceiving strong interests as a negative and toward a perspective that recognizes the strengths and potential of these personal pursuits.

Research has shown that people with autism may show intense interest in subjects like science, technology, and art - developing, for instance, a deep knowledge and appreciation of trains, mechanics, animals, or anime and cartoons. Read on...

  • 5 Reasons Your Child's Autism Puts a Strain on Your Marriage
  • There have been a number of articles, over the years, suggesting that parents of children with autism are more likely to divorce than parents of children with other disabilities. Several studies have looked into the issue and, unhelpfully, each came up with precisely opposite findings.

What researchers do know, however, is that autism is a uniquely stress-inducing disorder for caregivers. Autism can lead to unusual and difficult-to-manage changes, disagreements, and frustrations for parents. Read on...

  • 5 Ways to Advocate Successfully for Your Child's Special Education
  • Children with learning differences or other special education needs have a great advantage in meeting their educational goals if we parents understand just how much we can do to make a meaningful difference. How can you be the best advocate when it comes to getting the educational services your child needs? Here are five essentials every parent should know:

    1. Know Your Power: You Are Your Child's Best Advocate
Most parents find approaching school teachers and administrators to be nerve-wracking, if not downright intimidating. But parents, because they care so passionately, are always their children's best advocates. Parents know their children best and are often the first to know that a challenge won't go away on its own without intervention. Read on...

I would love advice from other parents who have gone through this transition process and and tips they may have. I appreciate any and all help.

We are a same sex couple with 11year old twins. Seeking an affordable lawyer knowledgeable in LGBTQ laws and special needs' laws. With the new administration it's critical that my partner completes second parent adoption for the boys, that our wills are updated, and that my severely autistic son is protected. Thank you. Hello Valerie's List,
I am one of many very concerned parents who have recently received a letter stating that our child will be forced to attend a new school next year with the combining of two schools' moderate/severe special education classrooms. I'm in the process of finding out what, if anything, we can do about this. I will be attending the Special Education Community Advisory Committee meeting next Thursday, Feb. 9th at 7pm at the Ballard Center in hopes of hearing answers to questions about why these changes are being made and how the district can justify putting our kids into classes with more kids in them. If anyone knows more about this and/or whether parents might be able to petition against these changes, etc., please contact me at sschafer211@gmail.com.

I have a son that would like to meet some other kids...Do u know of any others that live in the Encinitas Area that we can possibly meet? Or possibly other social clubs? My email is kimcorreia1@gmail.com

I have a sister with special needs. She is now 20 years old and for about one year now, she has decompensated. She had been on depakote for many years which helped managed her aggression and impulsivity but somehow her body is now "allergic" to this medication. Psychiatrists have tried different cocktails of medication to hopefully help her return to her previous lifestyle. She would participate in sports for exceptional athletes and would participate in other community activities. She does not participate in activities that she once enjoyed due to her severe aggression. She is diagnosed with Autism and intellectual disability. She has recently returned to school (she is slowly progressing). My parents care for her full time and it is a tough tough job as you might understand.

They are working with the regional center to hopefully find some respite for my parents. But honestly, we ran in to a wall with availability of services. My family is looking for a home for my sister to spend several days per week so she can learn some independent skills and detach some from my parents. I was wondering if you had any ideas of programs or homes we could look in to. Preferably in San Diego. She would be considered what they call a "level 14". Thank you! Norma Norms2309@gmail.com

My almost 17 year old son has high functioning autism and I'm trying to figure out what services I might be able to find for him. I'm getting nervous as he had more emotional troubles and gets closer to adulthood. Thanks. Linda ninjamommy@gmail.com

  • U.S. Department of Education Publishes New Transition Guide to Postsecondary Education and Employment for Students and Youth with Disabilities
  • Transition planning is a mandatory aspect of special education service delivery, according to federal special education law (IDEA 20 U.S.C. 1400). Federal law requires that school special education teams engage in transition planning for each student's transition to adulthood - that is, from high school to college or employment.

The law states specific requirements for transition planning. These requirements include timing, assessment, goals, and services. In January 2017, the United States Department of Education published "A Transition Guide to Postsecondary Education and Employment for Students and Youth with Disabilities," which explains IDEA's requirement for transition planning and its relationship to the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. The law recognizes these challenges and provides special protections to accommodate your child's special needs, individualize the educational program, ensure parent participation, and protect against discrimination. • 5 Research-Backed Benefits of Weighted Blankets and Vests
  • Weighted blankets and vests have been around as a therapy tool for a while now. Many parents have observed the calming effect they can have on children with autism and sensory issues. The science behind these weighted items is called Deep Touch Pressure (DTP). This is the term for the feeling of gentle, distributed weight on the body.

You can get the benefits of DTP in a variety of ways. Hugging is one way that everyone can experience DTP. Weighted vests, blankets, stuffed animals, or lap pads are all ways to get the benefits of DTP. As long as there is gentle, distributed weight, there will be benefits from DTP. Read on...

  • Children with autism and their mothers need for student research!

  • My name is Ariane Myers-Turnbull and I am a doctoral student at Alliant International University. I am currently recruiting participants for a project that is examining why children with autism are injured more often than children without autism. To participate you must be a mother of a child who is between the ages of 3 and 7 years old and who has been diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (i.e. autism, Asperger's, pervasive developmental disorder).

If you agree to participate in this study, you will be asked to come into a lab at Alliant International University to complete consent forms and questionnaires about you and your child. You will then be asked to observe your child in a room with simulated common household hazards from a live video. Your child will also be asked to complete simple tasks such as working with blocks. Overall, your participation in this study should take about 90 minutes.

After you and your child complete these tasks you will receive $20, be entered into a drawing for $400, and your child will receive a prize in appreciation for your participation. You will also receive a video of your child in the room and safety proofing materials. For further information please contact Ariane Myers-Turnbull at amyers-turnbull@alliant.edu or (858) 414-1076. Thank you for your time.
