News and Reviews
May 2017

Greetings Friends of Tattered Cover,

We have two quick things to introduce our May newsletter. First is an apology. We had promised to announce the winners of the "guess the quote contest" from the March newsletter in April; due to a minor snafu, that didn't happen.

So, belated congratulations to Abraham, Gina, Kelly, and Mary Lee for being the first four people to correctly identify this quote: " If there be any among us who would wish to dissolve this Union or to change its republican form, let them stand undisturbed as monuments of the safety with which error of opinion may be tolerated where reason is left free to combat it"  as being from Thomas Jefferson's First Inaugural Address.

Our four winners will each receive a $25 Tattered Cover gift card. And thank you to the more than 180 of you who also answered the challenge!

Second, May at Tattered Cover is rife with great events. To name just a few,  Wade Phillips  (former Broncos head coach and defensive coordinator) on  May 3  at Colfax;  Cory Doctorow  (award winning author of fiction and nonfiction) on  May 9  at Colfax, promoting his newest novel,  Walkaway Voice the Constitution  (a non-partisan, live reading at the U.S. Constitution) at Colfax on  May 21 Chuck Klosterman  (renowned author and essayists) at Colfax on  May 25 ; and one of our favorites,  Tiffanie DeBartolo author of  God-Shaped Hole, at Aspen Grove on  May 31 . ( Len  will be on hand to personally host this event as he read and loved this book!)

These are just five of the  fifty events we are hosting  at all our stores  in May . You can see the full event schedule here.

Thanks for your continued support of Tattered Cover; we hope to see you in the stores.

Len and Kristen

American War imagines a near future in which climate change has altered the very shape of the United States, leading to a second civil  war . But this is not an issue book. It's a brilliantly written novel with a host of issues forming the bedrock of a captivating story. The protagonist, Sarat, who we watch grow up throughout this sweeping epic, is shaped by events and circumstances around her in ways that will leave you thinking. The writing is accessible and insightful, and the topics --  war , the environment, the experience of refugees -- are brought home in real and sometimes haunting ways. -- Len Vlahos, owner

Out of Wonder: Poems
Celebrating Poets
by Kwame Alexander

"Rarely does a book of poetry come along that makes me stop people I barely know and demand they listen as I read aloud. Out of Wonder is such a book. To quote a snippet of the preface, "The title of this book comes from...Lucille Clifton. She wrote, 'Poems come out of wonder, not out of knowing.'" Alexander is so talented that he can echo other poets styles in original verse, creating mind-filling images that are flat-out irresistible. Now add Holmes' glorious mixed-media art that accompanies each poem- and all I can say is WOW. I read this book to our storytime audiences, I read it to coworkers, I read it to myself- and I'll read it to you if we cross paths. Just in case I don't see you, pick it up and discover this treasure for yourself! --  Jocelyn, Bookseller

Staff picks
by Nadeem Aslam

The Golden Legend
by Nadeem Aslam  just came out on April 18 and is one of the most human books I've read lately---honest and resonant. Set in today's Pakistan, where Christians are the minority, the story concerns Nargis, whose husband is accidentally killed by an American, and whose Christian neighbor is having an affair with a Muslim cleric's daughter (the widow of an Islamist fanatic). It's about passion and zealotry, hope and oppression, perseverance and intransigence--a wonderful, calmly compelling, and timely book, in every sense. -- Jennifer Martin, Bookseller
by Nathan Hale

"Young Adult Graphic Novel! There are a lot of fun ones out there that adults can enjoy, too. This one is for dystopian fans. Absolutely breathtaking illustrations that the author did himself (always makes it more impressive to me). A future in which aliens have eaten all of the technology humans made. The human race is forced to go back to the "dark ages". Except for our main characters who live in a travelling city. Their caravan roams around, just out of reach of the dangerous creatures, searching for technology/humans' history. I cried at the end." -- Barrie McComas, Bookseller

"Ruby Elliot is an English blogger, illustrator, artist and now first-time author that has captured through her drawings and cartoons how dealing with the daily struggles of mental health issues such as depression, anxiety and eating disorders can be painful but also sometimes hilarious.  Ruby's simple drawings appeal both to me (age 53) and to my daughter (age 19).  We both respond to the basic humanness and rawness of these drawings even though we're in very different times of our lives. Thank you Ruby Elliot for opening yourself up and sharing your pain which allows us as readers to understand mental health issues easier and with empathy." -- Suzie Mulligan, Colfax store manager

This month's #1...
by J. Robert Lennon

“Imagine a sentence that has the slow-burn intensity you feel when reading your favorite mystery novels and the nuance and music of your icons of prose style. Now imagine a whole book of them. Set that book in a small town in Upstate New York, move a family of city folk into a Shirley Jacksonian home, and tell part of the story from the point of view of an ‘Observer’ who could represent the reader, the author, a house spirit, God, or something else entirely. Now cede your imagination to J. Robert Lennon, whose new novel will transport and move you. A perfect union of breezy and deep, Broken River ($16.00 Graywold Press) has something for everyone.” — John Francisconi, Bank Square Books, Mystic, CT

New in paperback...
by Emma Cline

“Evie Boyd is a lonely 14-year-old adjusting to her parents' recent divorce and an emotional break with her childhood best friend. She encounters a wild and enchanting group of girls and is immediately drawn into their world of reckless abandon. Seduced by their thrilling, cult-like family hidden in the California hills, Evie finds herself pulled into events that will lead to unspeakable violence. Cline's captivating prose strips bare the deep desires and vulnerability of teenage Evie as she struggles for acceptance. The Girls is an enthralling and haunting novel that will linger with readers long after the last page.” — Tarah Jennings, Mitzi's Main Street Books, Rapid City, SD
