Hello Everyone,

Our two EMC+SIPI Symposiums currently planned for 2021 - ‘Raleigh’ in May and ‘Glasgow’ in July/August - are now joining forces and will be held virtually as one Symposium. This decision was made in response to information we have received about the high potential for travel restrictions to continue in some significant form well into 2021, the uncertainty around the COVID-19 vaccine production, and an increasing number of companies telling staff that travel through most, if not all, of 2021 will be severely limited. The EMC Society Board of Directors voted to make the decision now so we have more time to plan and execute an excellent Virtual Symposium.
The combined Virtual Symposium will be held in August 2021 and we are pleased to confirm it will continue to be held as a joint International Symposium with EMC Europe 2021. We will update you on the timing and structure later this month.

In the meantime, please note the submission deadline for papers as well as proposals for workshops, tutorials, and special sessions is January 25 (and continuing our Scottish theme, you might recognize that as “Burns Night”). If you have already submitted a paper and/or proposal to the ‘Raleigh’ Symposium, no action is required. Your paper and/or proposal will be automatically included in the review process for the Joint Virtual Symposium in August 2021.

While this was a difficult and disappointing decision, it allows us to focus on one outstanding virtual event without the risk of making a major change close to the two symposium dates. We would all have very much liked to have had in-person symposiums in 2021 in the beautiful cities of Raleigh and Glasgow. We also miss networking and the chance productive conversations that serendipitous meetings can lead to. Nevertheless, we will look to learn from our, and we hope your, experiences this year with the 2020 IEEE International Virtual Symposium on EMC+SIPI to maximize this important aspect of any conference.

We will be posting updates to the website regularly, please see www.emc2021.org and keep a watch out for more update emails.

Best wishes,
