iris yirei hu will share the work she's created as the 2025 Longenecker-Roth Artist in Residence at the Department of Visual Arts, UC San Diego. iris is a multidisciplinary journey-based artist from Los Angeles who works across paintings, installations, intercultural collaborations, writing, and public art.

Blurring the lines between cinema and live performance, Seaweeds re-imagines the lost ending of The Toll of the Sea, the 1922 silent film that introduced screen legend Anna May Wong (1905–1961) in the first-ever Technicolor motion picture. In Michelle Sui’s bold re-envisioning, actors audition for Wong herself, who breaks free from the script and takes off to Paris and Tijuana in search of her on-again, off-again girlfriend.

These works offer a multifaceted exploration of American Modernism’s relationship to Mexican culture that challenges dominant narratives of North American art. His work merges his academic background in art history with his upbringing in the postmodern drift of Tijuana’s urban landscape and later youth in the cultural sterility of suburban San Diego.

Alongside the art work, we are also planning a series of Saturday performances, discussions, and hands-on activities – all an attempt to disrupt and dishabituate ourselves from the bitter inertia of this moment.

My Barbarian (Malik Gaines, Jade Gordon, Alexandro Segade) presents Cat Suit, a series of prints representing the first 14 Minor Arcana cards alongside the video installation and sculpture. The exhibition debuts Nine of Cats (2025), a new video installation made with Eric Geiger, Matana Roberts, and Argel Rojo. The works suggest that all the joyful and tragic experiences foretold by the cards have already happened to those who came before us.
