April 2024 NEWS & UPDATES | STPHILIPS1600.ORG

Groundbreaking Ceremony

St. Philip's School and Community Center, in collaboration with esteemed partners including the City and County of Dallas, TREC Community Investors, and Matthews Southwest, celebrated a significant milestone on March 28 with the groundbreaking ceremony for a transformative community development project at 3300 Holmes Street. This initiative underscores our ongoing commitment to fostering accessible and affordable housing options in South Dallas.

The project, comprising 7 housing units within a 4-block radius of our campus, represents a collective effort to revitalize the community and address pressing needs for sustainable housing. With an investment of $2,355,950, this endeavor is poised to accommodate between 20 to 28 individuals, spanning diverse family sizes.

Designed by architect Jay Taylor of Juxta Designs and constructed by builder Paul Baccus of Ergo, these homes are slated to commence construction in late spring or early summer 2024, with delivery expected by year-end. The groundbreaking ceremony served as a symbol of hope and progress, bringing together stakeholders, community members, and media representatives to commemorate this significant step towards a brighter future for South Dallas.

As we embark on this journey, we invite all interested parties to join us in shaping the future of our community. Stay tuned for further updates as we continue to work towards our shared vision of inclusive and thriving neighborhoods.

Saturday Science Success: Perot Tech Truck on Campus

We're excited to highlight the success of the recent Saturday Science session, a collaborative endeavor between United to Learn and the Perot Museum. St. Philip's, representing cohort 3 in Southern Dallas, had the honor of hosting March's session in our state-of-the-art WeCreation Center.

Each month, the Perot Tech Truck brings tools and trinkets to support hands-on STEM learning. This month, students designed and played their own video games, along with creating video game controllers using conductive materials and MakeyMakey.

Thank you to the event coordinators, our dedicated teachers and the families who joined us for actively investing in the educational journey of each student here and igniting their passion for science! Dr. Flowers's Words of Wisdom

"Our mighty impact is undeniable. However, collective resources, passions, and talents, do not adequately explain why St. Philip’s has been successful. All these factors have played a role, but the reality is, had we not given credit where credit is due, St. Philip’s would merely be a spec and not special. Join us in pronouncing the ultimate credit for our accomplishments thus far. To God be the glory, to God be the glory, to God be the glory! This is where credit must be placed. As we continue impacting lives and uplifting community, let’s remain faithful that the same God, who got us to where we are today, has more than enough resources to get us where he wants us to go. Our best is yet to come!"

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Day of Service

The Day of Service event at St. Philip's was a resounding success, thanks to the dedication and hard work of our volunteers. Together, we rolled up our sleeves and worked tirelessly to clean our school grounds and surrounding community areas.

From picking up litter to tending to gardens, every act of service made a meaningful difference in beautifying our environment and fostering a sense of pride in our community.

Special thanks to Gold Auto for donating the dumpster containers, Independent Financial for providing the Chick-Fil-A lunches and frozen custard, TREC Young Guns, St. Andrew Methodist, the Dallas Stars Foundation, and HPUMC. The event not only showcased the power of collective action but also reinforced the importance of giving back and making a positive impact on the world around us.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Community Fest

The Community Fest hosted by Independent Financial was a vibrant celebration of community spirit and togetherness. Families and friends gathered for a day filled with fun activities, delicious food, and entertainment.

Thank you to Independent Financial, DPD canine unit and DPD neighborhood officers, Dallas Fire & Rescue, and the 19 partner agencies who partnered by hosting booths and providing resources and information. As we laughed, danced, and shared moments of joy, we were reminded of the importance of fostering a sense of unity and belonging in our neighborhood.

Feeding America's Farm Bill Fly-in

We're thrilled to share that Kelvin Browning and Angelyn Page, our dedicated managers at Aunt Bette's Community Pantry, recently participated in a Farm Bill Fly-in event.

Alongside 176 Feeding America network members, they met with Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett and Congressman Colin Allred's staff to advocate for a robust Farm Bill and continued support for vital anti-hunger programs.

Their discussions focused on the importance of programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) in combating food insecurity.

We're committed to ensuring that our community receives the support it needs to thrive, and we're grateful for the opportunity to amplify our voices on Capitol Hill.
