Dallas Catalyst Project
On Saturday, January 27, 2024, TREC (The Real Estate Council) Community Investors hosted a celebration to mark the successes and culmination of 6 years of investment in the Forest District. The community event featured food trucks, music, and fun. Following the program there were ribbon cutting ceremonies marking the completion of the 2023 Young Guns and Associate Leadership Council (ALC) projects in the neighborhood.
Through the years TREC Community Investors has provided grant funding to St. Philip’s for a multitude of projects. Most recently the Young Guns selected a St. Philip’s owned property, a former liquor store, and demonstrated their talent by providing funding and professional services. Their efforts aligned with our vision to transform the old green building into a street-side pop-up storefront named “The Hub on MLK” for the community.
The Dallas Catalyst Project, initiated by TREC Community Investors in 2017, was a collaboration with Cornerstone Baptist Church, Forest Forward and St. Philip’s, focusing on the revitalization of the Forest District. Initially, TREC Community Investors committed $1 million toward catalytic real estate projects that promoted equitable development, improved the quality of life for residents, increased job preparedness and wealth creation opportunities, enhanced public safety and outdated infrastructure, and supported mixed-income and affordable housing. This grew into a much greater investment over the years from TREC and many others who have been compelled by the vision and momentum.
We are so thankful to TREC Community Investors for their commitment to the Forest District through funding, professional services, resources, friendships, and so much more. Their impact has made a profound difference, and we will be forever grateful.

Developing Artists Outside the Classroom
St. Philip's Fine Arts Director, Iv Amenti, recently spearheaded an enlightening professional development event, titled: TINA: The Tina Turner Musical Professional Development. This opportunity was brought on through collaboration with Courtney Harbour, Broadway Dallas Education Director at DISD. The workshop aimed to parallel Tina Turner's life story, emphasizing the crucial elements of identity, vulnerability, and intimacy work.
Mrs. Iv, expressing her vision for the presentation, shared, "My goal was to take teachers through a journey of re-connecting to their own artistic authenticity and utilizing their authenticity as a tool to engage students in finding their own." The audience left the event inspired to infuse more of their genuine artistic selves into the classroom, encouraging an environment where students can explore and embrace their own creative voices. The partnership between St. Philip's and DISD underscores our commitment to meaningful professional development that goes beyond the surface, catering to the personal and artistic growth of educators.

Dr. Flowers's Words of Wisdom
"We have had generations of urban youth who have navigated through urban school systems to go on to achieve exceptional accomplishments in every walk of business, science, the arts, and literary excellence. Unfortunately, urban schools and social constructs have created a quest to get out with a yearn to not return. The trend over multiple generations has not been one of turning success into significance within the community that produced people like me, a native of the southside of Chicago."

In a remarkable achievement, our esteemed alumna, Hannah Selders, has been crowned the 66th Miss Hampton University. Her outstanding performance didn't go unnoticed, as she emerged as the sole contestant to receive four trophies, including multiple first-place awards in individual categories. Particularly noteworthy was her exceptional talent display, where she showcased her violin skills and left the audience in awe.
Hannah's journey doesn't stop there. In the upcoming year, she is set to complete her final year in a 5-year MBA program at Hampton University, graduating with two business degrees. Her commitment to excellence extends beyond academics; she currently holds the prestigious position of a Toyota PUSH Fellow and has consistently interned with the company every summer during her undergraduate experience.

A Glimpse of Ghana
We extend our gratitude to Mrs. Joyner for taking the time to visit campus and enlighten our 8th graders about their upcoming journey to Ghana, Africa. Her captivating presentation, drawing from her childhood in Ethiopia and her travels across the continent as an adult, provided invaluable insights into the rich tapestry of African culture. Mrs. Joyner's excitement about food, music, and spirituality not only piqued our students' curiosity but also provided essential background knowledge for their upcoming adventure. The delicious dishes she shared added an extra layer of joy, and we're delighted that our students embraced the experience with open minds. Thank you, Mrs. Joyner, for inspiring our students and faculty and enriching their anticipation for this unforgettable trip.

Congratulations to George T. Lee Principal Kellee Murrell for being selected to receive the Frederick D. Todd Education Award at the 6th Annual Living Legends and Scholarship Gala! We’re honored to have such a remarkable educator and leader on our campus, and we appreciate Ron Bivins and The People’s Servant Ministry for recognizing her outstanding work. Coming from a family of educators with a passion for children, Kellee knew in childhood that she’d one day become an educator. Thank you, Kellee, for your dedication to the students, faculty, and families of St. Philip’s!
