We're Growing: 7th-8th Grade Expansion
Prepare for Launch! After years of research and planning, we are excited to announce that we have board approval to move forward with launching 7th and 8th grade, establishing a comprehensive middle school program for our dynamic school. St. Philip’s will officially begin accepting applications for 7th grade this fall for the 2022-2023 school year and we will add 8th grade in the 2023-2024 school year. We are excited to expand our unparalleled academic experience and offer our families and students an additional two years “to belong” at St. Philip’s!
Summer at St. Philip's!
Our Early Childhood summer camp students have enjoyed the first three weeks of camp exploring and learning in a fun way. The first week they met Sparky the fire dog while learning about fire safety. The second week students studied food groups, nutrition, and the difference between healthy and unhealthy foods. The third week was all about STEAM (Science, Technology, Art, and Math). Thank you to Haking Innovation for leading our STEAM week!
St. Philip's Fishing Trips!
Students had a blast learning the basics of fishing at two separate events, “fishing with the fellas” and “girls gone fishing.” The Saturday meet-ups consisted of fishing, fun, and fellowship. Thank you to our fishing guides for a wonderful outdoor learning experience.
1600 Magazine Summer 2021
Hot of the press, our latest edition of the 1600 Magazine is perfect summer reading. Warmer temperatures bring about the season of blooming flowers, blossoming trees, and a reminder that at St. Philip’s, we BLOOM TOGETHER! We hope you enjoy the letters, stories, accomplishments, feats, and most of all, the support our organization continues to receive. If you haven’t already, check out our Summer 1600 Magazine and any other issues you may have missed!
Students Celebrate Juneteenth in Galveston, Texas
On June 19th and 20th, a St. Philips’s delegation of 29 students, family, and faculty traveled to Galveston, Texas to commemorate the 156th anniversary of word of the Emancipation Proclamation reaching enslaved Americans in Texas. The 2-day event featured a prayer breakfast with local and national elected officials, unveiling of the historic Juneteenth mural, participation in several Juneteenth festivals, and a STEAM field trip. The weekend provided students a lens into the past and a compass to direct their future. It was a resounding success with students and families asking St. Philip’s art teacher Jennifer Kindert to make the art/STEAM excursion an annual event. Here are a few highlights from our trip:
The students witnessed the unveiling of the Juneteenth mural at the landmark site where slavery was abolished in Texas. Students met the lead artist, Reginald Adams, who designed the epic mural titled Absolute Equality. What a treat it was to see our students stand in front of the mural on this momentous day, the day President Joseph R. Biden signed legislation making Juneteenth (June 19) a federal holiday.

Special thanks to Karla Klay for being our tour guide for the weekend and for providing the Artist Boat STEAM field trip. Sincere thanks to Sheridan Mitchell Lorenz, of Galveston, for providing charter bus service to allow the St. Philip's delegation. Thank you to The Tremont House Hotel for first class accommodations. Lastly, to Dr. Terry Flowers, St. Philip's Headmaster and Ms. Jennifer Kindert, St. Philip's art teacher, thank you for the opportunity to represent St. Philip’s at the historic Juneteenth celebration. We’re looking forward to our next adventure in 2022!

Our first week of summer basketball camp hosted 60 boys and girls for a week of skills and fun with Coach Mobley of the James Madison High School State Champs. These athletes ended camp with the ultimate slam dunk, an inspirational message from Spud Webb, former NBA player and St. Philip’s ambassador. Webb supports strong athletic programs in inner city communities like St. Philip’s, similar to the ones that shaped him growing up in Dallas in the 70's.

If you missed our first week of camp, it’s not too late to sign up for our next camp July 12th-15th from 9am-3pm. All boys and girls ages 6-14 years of age are welcome. Cost is $125/week and lunch will be provided for all athletes. Sign up here.
Alumni Updates
Whytne Stevens is a St. Philip’s alum who is pursuing a graduate degree in Urban Planning at Harvard University Graduate School of Design. We are so fortunate that this summer, as part of her program, she is working with St. Philip’s as a Community Service Fellow through Harvard’s Joint Center for Housing Studies. Whytne is assisting the Community Development team with proposed housing projects through research and design. Her interests within urban planning include creating cities that work for and include all people, cultivating community in our cities, and finding ways to incorporate art into urban planning. In addition to being an alum, Whytne is also the daughter of our outstanding faculty member, Tia Stevens. Welcome Whytne!
Congratulations to our Class of 2009 alum, Bobbye Hampton, for being named Rookie Teacher of the Year for the Stafford Municipal School District. Keep up the great work!

Gwen's Garden Volunteers Needed!
We need your help in Gwen’s Garden! Our garden provides fresh, organic vegetables to Aunt Bette's Community Pantry. The task of keeping the garden in constant motion requires several hours of labor. In addition to planting and harvesting, the garden must be routinely maintained, and that's where you can help. Volunteers are needed July 10 and July 31 from 9am-11am to weed, plant, harvest and perform any other duties which lend themselves to the upkeep and general beautification of the garden. To volunteer sign up here.
Aunt Bette's Community Pantry
Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry has a few volunteer slots available on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:45am-11:15 am and on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am-12pm. All volunteers must wear masks and gloves, maintain safe social distance, and neighbors are required to wear masks upon arrival. Masks are provided on a need basis. Sign up to volunteer.
Pantry Volunteers in Action!
Plains Capital Bank
Four representatives from Plains Capital Bank recently served in Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry. The college students are participating in the summer credit training internship program. One requirement is that they complete a half day of community service and make a formal presentation to their managers and other bank employees about the food pantry operations and its impact in the South Dallas neighborhood. We appreciate that Plains Capital Bank is fostering and instilling the importance of community service in their employees. Pictured: Bryson Owensby, David Nnadozi, Dylan Topolski, Will Velvin
St. John’s Episcopal School
We were so fortunate to have eight hard-working students and their faculty sponsors from St. John’s Episcopal School in the pantry last month. These committed middle schoolers woke up extra early on their day off to serve our community. The students are members of a new Community Service Leadership organization at St. John’s. Due to COVID, their activities had been limited over the last year, so this was their official re-launch, and their excitement and energy was contagious. We look forward to having this group back in the future. Thank you, St. John’s Episcopal School!
Friends of St. Philip’s
Friends of St. Philip’s is excited to donate $15,000 to St. Philip’s School and Community Center this year to support the unparalleled educational experience for students.

Lastly, Dee Dee Hoak joined as the Faculty and Staff Appreciation Board Member. The Board of FOSP is excited to continue serving and giving back to SPSCC during the next school year!
