Winter Storm Uri Brings Damages to St. Philip’s Campus
We would like to share our utmost gratitude to all those who have prayed, donated, and stood by our organization through this tumultuous year. Due to Winter Storm Uri, a major pipe burst at St. Philip's and caused extensive water damage in the Legacy Building on our campus. Due to the unexpected damages, our Legacy Building will undergo a much-needed renovation. We are thankful for The Moody Foundation and the Mayor’s Disaster Relief Fund for providing grants to help our recovery efforts. Many thanks to Texas Land Care, Inc. for sending dozens of plumbers to South Dallas to support our neighbors who also experienced flooding and other issues from pipe bursts. A big thank you also goes out to St. Michael and All Angels Church, Highland Park United Methodist Church, and Good Shepherd Episcopal Church for their support.

Of course, with transition comes change. The construction in our Legacy Building has forced us to relocate our students and teachers to other classrooms within the building. We are grateful to our parents, teachers, and staff for being so resilient through it all. St. Philip’s continues to send thoughts and prayers for all those affected by the winter storm.
21st Annual Destiny Award Luncheon Tickets are Available NOW!
Tickets and sponsorships are available for our 21st Annual Destiny Award Luncheon on Friday, March 26th. This virtual experience will feature a conversation with Pulitzer Prize and National Humanities Medal winning author Isabel Wilkerson. She is the author of The New York Times bestsellers, The Warmth of Other Suns and Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents. Wilkerson is a gifted storyteller, captivating audiences with the universal human story of migration and reinvention, as well as the unseen hierarchies that have divided us as a nation, in order to find a way to transcend them. She has become an impassioned voice for demonstrating how history can help us understand ourselves, our country, and our current era of upheaval.

The Destiny Award luncheon is our biggest fundraiser of the year. By supporting Destiny, you help St. Philip’s continue to transform the world through faith, education, and service. Click here for information about the event, tickets, and sponsorship opportunities.

Alumni Spotlight
Crystal Brown, a St. Philip’s Alum, was highlighted in Hockaday’s African American alumnae group for Black History Month. Brown is a performing artist, director, and theater educator based in San Francisco, CA. She currently teaches theater at The Brandeis School of San Francisco, where she's established a middle school theater department and introduced a lower school theater curriculum. While she greatly loves both teaching and directing, she looks forward to returning to performance soon.
Volunteers in Action!
St. Philip’s COVID-19 Vaccine Registration Center
With the help of 62 volunteers, we have registered 301 neighbors at our Vaccination Registration Center in the Doherty Family Fieldhouse. We will continue to register residents by phone, through our pantry, and at events hosted on our campus. Throughout March and beyond as necessary, we will educate the community, so they feel empowered to make an informed choice about the COVID-19 vaccine.
ICMYI: We hosted a COVID-19 education panel at our February Community Meeting where Carolee Estelle, M.D., Internal Medicine - Infectious Diseases and Geographic Medicine Infectious Diseases at UTSW, provided education, answered questions, and addressed concerns from the audience of community members. The meeting was recorded and is available below.
Parents of Alums - Serving in the Pantry!
We love that there are so many Parents of Alums who are volunteers in the Pantry! According to Jackie Longshaw, “It’s like coming back home.” Jackie serves every Wednesday, which is her day off from work as a pediatrician in DeSoto. Her youngest graduated from St. Philip’s with Angelyn Page’s son and Felicia Thornton’s youngest daughter. Angelyn, our Pantry Coordinator, is there every day, and Felicia is an AmeriCorps member working in the Pantry four days a week. Natalie Crawford and LaTasha McDade, both parents of St. Philip’s alums, also work in the pantry. Both Natalie and LaTasha brought their daughters over the holidays to serve as well. Natalie works in Human Resources at AT&T where she is encouraged to volunteer and give back to the community. Regina Walton is another parent of alum who currently volunteers in the pantry. Regina is the Director of Human Resources at St. Philip’s. Kim Wilson just recently joined the growing list of parents of alums working in the Pantry. Thank you to all of you for your time and service, it is so appreciated, and such a testimony to the heritage and connection between the school and community center.

Bag Donations for Pantry Clients
Lael Brodsky is a fierce advocate for our neighbors who visit the pantry on foot. She is always concerned about how these individuals will carry the large amounts of food home, so sprang into action and let her friends know she was collecting rolling luggage to assist our clients. In no time at all her garage was full of donated suitcases and bags. Another pantry volunteer and friend, Dee Dee Hoak, had the idea to purchase the giant reusable IKEA bags. Dee Dee and others have donated 340 of these bags to the pantry and they are being put to use every day. Neighbors are even bringing these bags back to the Pantry to load up their groceries on their next visit. Thank you Lael and Dee Dee for your generosity, innovation, and for caring so much for the neighbors who visit the Pantry.
Anaya’s Food Drive
Anaya Dube is a 10-year-old who is wise beyond her years. Inspired by her years as a student at St. Philip’s, Anaya organized a food drive for Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry for Valentine's Day. She communicated the need for food donations and set up collection boxes. Anaya also stays connected to St. Philip’s through the monthly Girls Night Out program. We are so thankful for Anaya and applaud her efforts to support the Pantry during this time of increasing need in our community.
Aunt Bette's Community Pantry
Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry has a few volunteer slots available on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:45am-11:15am. All volunteers must wear masks and gloves, maintain safe social distancing, and neighbors are required to wear masks upon arrival. Masks are provided for those without one. If you are interested in helping out, sign up here. Sign up to volunteer.
Tackle Hunger Souper Bowl of Caring - A Success!
Thank you to all our donors who participated in the Tackle Hunger Souper Bowl of Caring for Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry. We raised a grand total of $8,783.99 which will directly support our pantry. If you didn’t get a chance to donate during Tackle Hunger Souper Bowl of Caring, you can make a donation on our website.
Diapers and Donuts!
St. Philip’s partnered with Lullaby House and the Dallas Stars Foundation for a Diaper Giveaway on Saturday, February 27, serving 160 families in the drive-through event. Everyone received diapers, wipes, formula, bottles, pacifiers, toiletries, and a t-shirt and pair of socks for mom. Baby clothes were also available for those who were interested.

Dunkin' Donuts sponsored the event by donating individually packaged donut holes for all attendees, as well as donuts and coffee for the volunteers.

Special thanks to Chelsea Livingston and Marty Turco from the Dallas Stars Foundation for their enthusiastic and ongoing support of St. Philip’s and for providing volunteers for this event.
Friends of St. Philip’s
Friends of St. Philip’s held its General Membership meeting on February 10. The virtual event, via Zoom, featured Ashlee Kleinert of Ruthie’s Rolling Cafe, Chad Houser of Cafe Momentum, and Dr. Froswa Booker-Drew, VP of Community Affairs and Strategic Alliances for the State Fair of Texas. We were inspired by these community leaders who spoke about their involvement with the St. Philip’s community and South Dallas. If you could not attend, or would like to share with others, you can view the recording here.

We look forward to continuing to serve the South Dallas community as ambassadors for St. Philip’s School and Community Center. If you have not already done so, please join us in this effort by becoming a member or renewing your membership now. Your membership, starting at $50, is valid through December 2021.
