March 2023 NEWS & UPDATES | STPHILIPS1600.ORG

Recap of the 23rd Annual Destiny Award Luncheon presented by JPMorgan Chase & Co.

Our Annual Destiny Award Luncheon was an illumination of faith, service, and education! On Friday, March 3rd, friends, family, and supporters of St. Philip’s School and Community Center gathered at the Hilton Anatole for a spectacular student showcase, inspiring conversation and celebration of service.  Thanks to your contributions, we exceeded our fundraising goal! Donations totaled over $1.2 million, directly benefiting services promoting our Christian education, senior services, hunger, student engagement, and athletics.

The luncheon featured a moderated conversation between Bruce DuBose and Primetime Emmy and Golden Globe award-winning actor, Sterling K. Brown. In awe of our student's excellence and the tremendous support received, Mr. Brown left us with a message "Our words are not merely descriptive, but they are creative... To create this village, it's not just about education... We're talking about everything for a community to thrive... And such a major part of that, [is] to know that not only do these students see themselves, but that you all see them."

In the spirit of celebration, Ellen and John McStay, were presented with the 2023 Mona & David Munson Humanitarian Award for their faith and good works throughout the community. We extend a special thanks to everyone who gave their time, treasure, and talent to make this year's Destiny Award Luncheon successful.

2023 Black Wall Street

Our 7th-grade students became entrepreneurs and presented the successes and challenges they encountered while being business owners in their 2023 rendition of Black Wall Street. They delivered their presentations during the Social Studies Fair and the Annual 23rd Destiny Award Luncheon presented by JPMorgan Chase & Co.

"Learning about Tulsa Black Wall Street as an economic beehive and matching the students in the role of an entrepreneur allowed them the learn about how business, health and community are related. It was important because seeing African Americans in a light as successful business owners gives students the hope that it can be done again despite the massacre that occurred in 1921." - Mrs. Stephanie Givens, Middle School Social Studies Teacher
