On Saturday, May 7th, kids and youth will select gifts for their moms, while moms enjoy hand massages, snacks, and children’s performances at our Mother’s Day Gift Store. This annual event gives kids in the community an opportunity to shop for Mother’s Day presents at no cost. Every year our goal is to help 150 children by providing gifts for their mothers. We are so thankful for all the donations that we have already received to make this event possible.

St. Philip’s 5th grade class was able to resume their Annual Civil Rights Trip after Covid-19 brought all excursions to a halt in 2020. Students traveled to Selma, Montgomery, Tuskegee, Birmingham, and Atlanta, in an effort to allow them a deepened and more meaningful understanding of how the Civil Rights movement impacted the lives of all Americans. Students and faculty chaperones were so excited to reignite this annual academic excursion.

Over the past 8 weeks, 1st - 6th grade students participated in a golf clinic series during their scheduled physical education time. WE NEED YOU! Volunteers Make the World Go Round
|
|
Aunt Bette's Community Pantry
We need your help to provide pre-packaged boxes of staple foods, along with bags of produce, dairy and frozen meats, for curbside distribution to our clients. Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry has a few volunteer slots available on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:45am-11:15 am and on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am-12pm. All volunteers must wear masks and gloves, maintain safe social distance, and neighbors are required to wear masks upon arrival. Masks are provided on a need basis. Sign up to volunteer.
Volunteers continue to pick up surplus meals daily from Snap Kitchen at Mockingbird/Skillman. These meals are distributed through Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry, and through other nearby partners when our pantry is closed. Please contact Dee Velvin if you are interested in helping with this effort as a substitute driver. Pick-ups are in the mornings.

Gwen’s Garden
We would love YOUR help in Gwen's Garden! We need volunteers to assist with our community garden on the first Saturday of the month. The task of keeping the garden in constant motion requires several hours of labor. In addition to planting and harvesting, the garden must be routinely maintained, and that is where you can help. Volunteers are needed to weed, plant, harvest, and perform any other duties which lend themselves to the upkeep and general beautification of the garden.

EY Connect Day
We want to extend a big thank you to Kevin Muskat and his colleagues at Ernst & Young LLP for selecting St. Philip’s as the site for this year’s EY Connect Day. On Friday, April 22nd, approximately 80 volunteers from Ernst & Young traveled to St. Philip’s to perform volunteer work across the campus (Gwen’s Garden, Aunt Bette’s Pantry, Athletic Field, and campus grounds). The focus of the event was environmental sustainability, which could not be more appropriate given that it occurred on Earth Day! This marked the EYs sixth year bringing a large group to volunteer at St. Philip’s!
We would also like to thank EY for their generous donation to Gwen’s Garden honoring the anniversary of Gwen Barjon’s passing.

St. Andrew UMC Partners with St. Philip’s for Continued Community Cleanup Efforts
Sixteen volunteers from St. Andrew United Methodist Church in Plano returned to campus for the 4th time to tackle more outdoor cleanup projects. They are making a tremendous difference in the appearance and safety of the neighborhood, and as Dr. Flowers noted: “Your service signals hope and ignites uplift.” We are so thankful for the commitment and hard work of each team from St. Andrew UMC.

Touring St. Philip’s and Beyond
|
|
Every couple of months there is a unique opportunity to have a special tour of the campus and the surrounding neighborhood with Dr. Flowers. There is so much historical and current context that Dr. Flowers shares on each of these tours - it is a combination of a walking tour of the school campus and pantry, coupled with a bus tour of the neighborhood. The bus tour highlights the community development work over the last two decades plus current and future plans for revitalization on MLK Jr. Blvd. If you are interested in a tour, please send us an email.

St. Philip’s hosts monthly Community Meetings on our campus as an opportunity for neighbors to hear about pertinent issues and opportunities and gain valuable information. Every month, Officer Bryan Joseph of the Dallas Police Department presents crime statistics and fields questions. This month, there was a packed agenda with representatives from DART, Parkland Community Development Representatives, the Forest Heights Neighborhood Association President, and more. Community Meetings are held at St. Philip's on the 4th Thursday of every month - everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.
