Fall Community Cleanup
50 hard-working volunteers joined us on Saturday, October 14th for our Fall Community Cleanup, and it was indeed a beautiful cool, crisp morning! Teams from St. Andrew Methodist and Top Ladies of Distinction worked on two sites, one of which is the home of a longtime neighbor who so appreciated the help and attention to his overgrown property. He was beaming with pride after the work was completed and lunch was delivered to him.
The biggest group was The Young Guns Class of 2023 from The Real Estate Council that is helping us renovate a former liquor store on MLK, Jr. Blvd. They worked on the building and the surrounding area, including the overgrowth around the athletic fields. After a long morning’s work, box lunches and fellowship were enjoyed by volunteers and staff.
We are very grateful for our sponsors: Gold Auto Recycling provided three dumpster containers, and Sharon Redd, Dave Perry Miller Real Estate for underwriting lunch. Thank you again to our volunteers and to our sponsors – these cleanups infuse vibrancy in our neighborhood!
We also want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to MapleMark Bank for being a part of this meaningful day by offering free shredding services to our community. Their support added an extra layer of community engagement to this impactful event.

A Closer Look at the Battle for Banned Books
Book banning is rapidly sweeping across the US. It occurs when private individuals, government officials, or organizations remove books from libraries, school reading lists, or bookstore shelves because they object to their content, ideas, or themes.
Many who advocate a ban typically complain that the book in question contains graphic violence, expresses disrespect for parents and family, is sexually explicit, exalts evil, lacks literary merit, is unsuitable for a particular age group, or includes offensive language. Seems fair, right?
But how harmful really is a picture book or ‘The Lorax’ by Dr. Seuss? What started as an attempt to safeguard the minds of our youth is now considered an attempt to push an agenda and dissipate integral parts of history and cultures. Timeless classics are being removed from the shelves in bulk, and we decided to fight against book banning by reading banned books.
Join us in the fight against book banning and support our Trammell Crowe Library by celebrating the freedom to read at our Fall Scholastic Book Fair from November 13th-17th. Let's stand together to ensure that timeless classics and valuable literature remain accessible to all.

Empire Roofing & United Mechanical - Supporting Redevelopment on MLK Jr. Blvd.
Empire Roofing is once again supporting our community development efforts by replacing the roof on one of our recent acquisitions on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. This building is being used by a ministry that conducts daily addiction recovery group meetings in the space. The roof was in very bad condition with significant water pooling, making it structurally unsafe. Additionally, United Mechanical has generously donated their time, materials, and services to install an all-important HVAC system.
We are incredibly thankful to Matt Kelley / Empire Roofing and David Osborn / United Mechanical for their continued generosity and investment in our community. Their teams have worked diligently and collaborated to complete these important projects as part of St. Philip’s efforts to revitalize the community.

Friends of St. Philip’s continues to generously support the mission of St. Philip’s through various volunteer opportunities, including the food pantry, athletics, faculty and staff appreciations and tutoring. | |
