Gwen’s Garden Volunteers Needed
We need your help in St. Philip's School and Community Center's Garden "Gwen's Garden" this weekend, October 9th. Volunteers are needed every first Saturday of the month to weed, plant, harvest, and perform any other duties which lend themselves to the upkeep and general beautification of the garden. The garden provides fresh, organic vegetables to Aunt Bette's Community Pantry. Students, teachers, and volunteers plant and harvest these vegetables with the hopes of providing nourishment to those who would not otherwise have access to fresh, organic food. Sign up for our next garden clean up here. Contact Tia Stevens with any questions you may have.

Remembering Clarence Brown
We are deeply saddened by the loss of Clarence Brown, board member, donor, and dedicated supporter of St. Philip’s School and Community Center. On behalf of St. Philip’s, we would like to send our deepest condolences to Shonn Brown and family for their loss. Clarence pushed equal education opportunities for black children to help narrow the gap in achievement, and we are blessed to have had such an inspiration on our board. We are eternally grateful for Clarence’s generous support to our organization throughout the years. May his soul rest in perfect peace, as his life here on earth was truly a light to everyone he encountered.

Pantry Volunteer Spotlight
Since June of 2019 Dr. Jackie Longshaw has been volunteering in Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry every Wednesday, which is her day off. She lives in the community and is a pediatrician at Pediatrics Southwest in DeSoto. Jackie’s passion for St. Philip’s has deep roots as her children are both graduates of St. Philip’s. Jackie works tirelessly inside the pantry, and as a seasoned volunteer, she mentors and manages other volunteers, and when asked why she loves her Wednesday mornings in the Pantry, Jackie says “it was like coming back home.” Thank you, Jackie for your faithful service to St. Philip’s and the community.

Beehive Installation Provides Honey for Community Residents
Through a 3-year grant from Capitol One Bank, and a partnership with Alveole Urban Beekeeping Company, St. Philip's School and Community Center has been selected as an urban beekeeping site. Alveole will provide educational workshops for our students to learn about bees, beekeeping, how bees make honey, and how they are a benefit to the urban ecosystem. Over the course of the grant, honey will be harvested on site from the hives, bottled, and donated to our school's food pantry for community residents to enjoy. The journey and updates of our beehive happening can be viewed here.

St. Andrews Pruning Project
Recently St. Andrew United Methodist Church in Plano sent a team of 12 volunteers to tackle a large pruning project on our campus. This delightful and hardworking group worked in the heat for over 3 hours cleaning the bushes, vines, and trees in the alleys surrounding our athletic fields. With their chainsaws and clippers, they filled up two dumpsters which were donated by Gold Metal Recyclers. After the cleanup, St. Andrew UMC provided a BBQ lunch which was enjoyed by the volunteers as well as many of our neighbors. Thank you so much to our friends at St. Andrew UMC for their commitment to St. Philip’s and the community!

Young Guns Create at the WeCreation Center!
Great things are happening in the WeCreation Center! As part of their support in our revitalization efforts in the Forest District, The Real Estate Council's (TREC) Young Guns helped us create rolling desks in St. Philip's WeCreation Center. WeCreation's vision is to serve as an inviting and culturally relevant gathering space that inspires and equips individuals and organizations while facilitating collaboration on complex community topics. We are thankful for all the partners that came together to make the vision of WeCreation possible!
