Snow Day/FID Day Information

We wanted to take a moment to clarify the differences between Snow Days and Flexible Instruction Days (FID), as well as provide you with important updates regarding our schedule.

Snow Days: In the event of inclement weather, Snow Days are declared to ensure the safety of our students and staff. Please note that all Snow Days must be made up on the school calendar. The Snow Day from January 6th will be made up on Monday, February 17th. We have already notified all districts that transportation will be required on this day.

Flexible Instruction Days (FID): The state of Pennsylvania allows schools to use up to 5 Flexible Instruction Days (FID) per school year. On these days, students complete assignments from home rather than attending school in person. We have used 2 FIDs so far this year: November 6th and January 16th.

On FID days, assignments are typically available through a variety of platforms, depending on the grade level:

  • Primary students may receive folders/packets of work or access assignments on Class Dojo or Google Classroom.
  • Middle school students should check their Google Classroom for each of their scheduled classes on that day.

Please ensure that your child completes the work assigned for these days to stay on track with their learning.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

Reminder: School is in session on Monday, February 17th as a Snow Day Make Up Day.

Catholic Schools Week: January 26th- February 1st

Please send in $5 for the coupon book which will allow your child to participate in each day's theme. The $5 should be submitted in an envelope with your child's name and homeroom teacher's name or room number.

Golden Apple Nominations

Dear Catholic School Community,

We have quickly approached that time of the school year when we are honored to recognize the outstanding Catholic educators in the Diocese of Pittsburgh Catholic schools. Please assist us in nominating teachers and principals for the prestigious Golden Apple Award. Below is a brief history of the award and the family who created it.

Jack and Rhodora Donahue are parents of thirteen children, all of whom were educated in Catholic schools. Mr. and Mrs. Donahue were eager to express their deep appreciation to Catholic school teachers for providing a quality academic and faith-filled education for their children. Therefore, in 1991, the Donahue Family approached Bishop Donald W. Wuerl, Bishop of Pittsburgh, who immediately embraced the idea of a Golden Apple Award. To begin the award process, a committee was formed, and in 1992, the first award dinner was held to honor seventeen outstanding Catholic teachers. This beautiful tradition lives on today and has spread to other dioceses throughout the United States.

Teachers, parents, and students are invited annually to nominate a teacher and/or a principal for the Golden Apple Award. A small committee at each school selects the individual representing the school. The completed application packet is submitted to the Catholic Schools Office. A selection committee then evaluates the nominations and chooses the awardees with the approval of the Superintendent of Catholic Schools. The awardees are then notified by letter, email, and telephone. Awardees receive the beautiful Golden Apple Award, a cash award, and a Certificate of Achievement.

Many people have made the Golden Apple Award program in the Diocese of Pittsburgh a notable success throughout the years. Without the generosity and kindness of the Donahue Family Foundation, this award would not be possible.

I know all too well how special all our teachers and principals are and how hard they work. This school year is a shining example of their dedication and faith. I pray you are able to take the time to nominate a teacher or principal who goes above and beyond every day by submitting a letter of recommendation to your principal. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

God bless,

Lauren Martin

Sacred Heart Winter Sports Schedule

Keep up to date with Sacred Heart’s sports this winter with this schedule link below. You can also find the Winter Sports Schedule on our school website under “Athletics” and “SHAA Events”.

Winter Sports Schedule

During basketball season, it's great to see our school spirit with so many student fans in attendance. Unfortunately, some of our student fans are not supervised by an adult and leave the building to walk around the neighborhood, play around in the basement of the Activities Building, or run onto the court without permission during timeouts or breaks.

To ensure your child's safety and to make sure that games are run smoothly without issue, it is required that students in 8th grade and under have an adult in the building that is supervising them. This can be a parent or one parent that can supervise a group of students. Students cannot be dropped off without a plan for adult supervision.

Please make sure that students:

  • Do not go onto the court and play during timeouts or breaks between quarters or half time.
  • Sit in the bleaches only and not on the floor at the baseline.

Thank you for your cooperation in making this a fun and safe basketball season!
