June Gloom Applies to Metallic Balloon Outages Too
|
How likely is it — 3 1/2 months apart — for the very same customers at nearly the very same time of day to experience power outages caused by adrift metallic balloons? As it turns out, very likely for nearly 4,000 Southern California Edison customers in Santa Monica, first on New Year's Day and then again on April 14, starting at 10:27 a.m. and 10:09 a.m., respectively, and lasting for more than nine hours in both cases.
One of those affected customers, Sean Tao, the owner of Chomp Eatery and Juice Station, didn’t know at the time what caused the outages but, unlike many customers, was not surprised when he learned.

Manhattan Beach Will Switch to 100 Percent Clean Power for City Facilities
All Manhattan Beach city facilities will be powered by 100 percent green energy starting in June. At a council meeting last month, local leaders voted to increase the city’s elected power tier with the Clean Power Alliance from 50 percent to 100 percent renewable energy. “It’s not an understatement to say this would be the biggest environmental decision that has ever been made in the city,” said Environmental Sustainability Manager Dana Murray. The move will cost between $70,000 to $90,000, according to Murray, but those funds will not come from an increase in tax dollars.
