Happy Holidays!

snowman-family.jpg

We are almost at the beginning of a new year! Our students have been in the classroom for several months and have learned a lot!

The have covered a variety of topics in the classroom like community building, trees and machines. They have made a few trips and have had a few visitors to further learn about these topics. These activities help our students develop their mathematical and scientific thinking, social and emotional skills, language and literacy abilities and bring the joy of learning. A pre-K education is highly beneficial to a child's development! You can read more on what the latest research says about a pre-K education here.

What are the three public pre-K programs?

With pre-k registration starting early next year, you may be starting your journey of researching your choices for the start of your child's education. We know it may be difficult to differentiate the available public pre-k programs in Mecklenburg county, so we created a guide to make this process easier.

Teacher Testimonial

Here's what one of our teachers had to say about why she became an early childhood educator:

"I wanted to become a lead teacher because I believe that early childhood education is one of the most important foundations when it comes to a child's education. I wanted to be a part of that so I could help impact a child's educational journey. Since this is their first time in school, for many of them, you get to be the first teacher to show them how amazing school is, how amazing learning is and it's very rewarding to see their progress."

MECK Pre-K in the Classroom

Here are a few highlights from some of our MECK Pre-K classrooms over the past few weeks.

Students worked together to make pumpkin cloud dough which then they could use like clay and make into different shapes.

Little astronauts dressed up to learn about rockets, space and the planets. They learned to research and separate moon rocks by size and learned what astronauts eat.

Our future engineers learned all about machines in the classroom and learned how to use all kinds of tools to create all sorts of fun objects and structures.

Is your child not old enough for pre-K?

Books to Enrich your Holidays

young-boy-reading.jpg

For many people, the holidays are an opportunity to spend time with family. And every family has its own culture and its own way of doing things. That's why we recommend reading the book, How We Say I Love You, written by Nicole Chen and illustrated by Lenny Wen, with your young family members. In this book, little Hana explores the many ways that her family members show their love without saying, “I love you.” You can find a read-aloud version of the story here, or get your own copy for free from the Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. To register for the program, use this link.

How We Say I Love You is just one of the many rich and beautiful books included in the Imagination Library collection. After reading this story, you can talk with your child about the ways that your family members and friends show their love for one another. Do you take your neighbor soup when they are ill? Do you rub grandma’s feet when she is tired? What is your family’s way of showing love? Talking about the ways that your family is special builds a sense of belonging for your child and helps children see ways that they can actively participate in your family’s traditions and culture.
