Welcome Back for the
2022-2023 School Year!
|
|
It's that time of year again! MECK Pre-K teachers, assistant teachers and site administrators returned on August 17th to kick-off the new school year. Excited and ready to help young children build a foundation for lifelong learning, they spent the week training, setting up classrooms, conducting family "meet-n-greets" and more. This week students are doing staggered entry, giving them the opportunity to explore their classroom, connect with their new teachers and experience the daily routine.
We we're honored to have Mecklenburg County Manager, Dena Diorio join us at the kick-off event to celebrate successes, extend gratitude and provide words of encouragement for all of the hard work done on a daily basis to provide high-quality pre-K to children in our community. Check out the Mecklenburg Minute video below to hear from Dena and some of our MECK Pre-K providers. On Tuesday, September 6 we will officially start the school year; each class will have their full roster of students present and begin a year of fun and learning. MECK Pre-K will serve almost 1,900 children and their families this year, and we can't wait to see them walk across that stage to receive their pre-K diplomas next June!

Here's what MECK Pre-K Curriculum and Teacher Support Manager, Shakekia Moss had to say about her team's role in MECK Pre-K:
"It is an honor to work for Smart Start and have the opportunity to be a part of MECK Pre-K. We support our teachers and families directly through MECK Pre-K staff members. I am fortunate to supervise a team of outstanding Success Coaches who work directly with our teachers on a daily basis. Each coach is assigned to specific MECK Pre-K classrooms, and works hand-in-hand with teachers on training, curriculum, best practices, and ongoing implementation of high quality instruction. MECK Pre-K would not be possible without our dedicated teachers, so our staff works hard to support them in every way. This lays the foundation for our children’s success in Kindergarten and plants the seed for them to take ownership and become leaders of their learning."

Curiosity is learning! That's the moto at MarcoPolo Learning where they've studied the r esearch showing that curiosity triggers areas in the brain that help us become better at learning skills and retaining information. MarcoPolo Learning's award-winning educational content is designed to nurture curiosity in children, allowing them to learn more and ultimately become better learners. During the time period between February-April 2022, MarcoPolo Learning ran a pilot with MECK Pre-K. Watch the video below to hear from teachers who shared about their experience using the MarcoPolo for Educators platform. MECK Pre-K is excited to introduce this tool in all of our classrooms this year to enhance the learning experience!

The MECK Pre-K team hosted multiple screening events this summer, giving families a chance to get ahead on the screenings needed for their child to attend MECK Pre-K. The team, with the help of several community partners screened nearly 1,000 students at these events.

Scholarship Opportunities for Early Childhood Educators
|
|
At MECK Pre-K we pride ourselves on having teachers with the highest quality education and skills to teach and shape the minds of our little scholars. Smart Start recognizes the high cost of poor childcare and invests funds to offer teacher training, and bonus payments for teachers intent on attaining higher education levels. Many of our teachers and assistant teachers at MECK Pre-K are continuing their education with the help of the STRIVE Scholarship program at Central Piedmont Community College, and the Teacher Preparation Grant at University of North Carolina Charlotte. These are great tools for current teachers wanting to advance in their careers and for those looking to enter the early childhood education profession. Smart Start Expands Dolly Parton's Imagination Library in Mecklenburg County
|
|
Dolly Parton's Imagination Library of Mecklenburg County mails children enrolled in the Charlotte area a free, high-quality, age-appropriate book to their house every month. The organization currently delivers free, age-appropriate books to over 29,000 Mecklenburg County children each month.
In 2021, the Imagination Library announced an innovative way to get books into the hands of young children by partnering with various MECK Pre-K classroom locations. The program has since expanded its footprint by increasing repurposed newspaper bins as Free Little Libraries to an additional ten locations. These new locations bring the total to twenty Little Libraries throughout the Charlotte area.
"The Little Libraries initiative is a great way to help children build their home libraries. We are dedicated to improving literacy rates in Mecklenburg County. We know the first step is providing children access to age-appropriate books to build literacy skills. Our community partners continue to make this possible by graciously hosting our Little Libraries," stated Ayesha Rahim, Literacy Coordinator. Mecklenburg County Youth Sports Program
|
|
Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation offers a wide variety of youth sports opportunities for children as young as three-years-old. Several MECK Pre-K students enrolled in the soccer skills program during our recent screening event at Revolution Park Sports Academy. From flag football to soccer, baseball to cross county, basketball and more, there's something for everyone!
The youth sports philosophy in Mecklenburg County is based on three main goals.
- Safety
- Fun
- Participation development based on the following:
- Everyone Plays - Providing opportunities to learn skills and improve conditioning by minimizing roster sizes and ensuring that players play at least half of every game.
- Balanced teams - Building teams that are evenly balanced with regard to skill level and ability
- Positive Coaching - Providing training and education for coaches to assist in the development of the player's self-worth and confidence.
- Sportsmanship - Creating a positive environment that fosters mutual respect
Learn more about the program and how to sign your child up on Park and Rec's website or by visiting your local neighborhood recreation center.
