On A Pilgrimage With The Aberdeen Bishops

Dear Friends:
For the past week, I’ve been on a pilgrimage in Scotland with four other “Aberdeen Bishops”, so named because we were all ordained during the COVID lockdown. Our consecration services were modeled after the ordination of our founding Bishop, Samuel Seabury. Seabury was ordained in 1784 in Aberdeen in a very simple service, with the minimum number of three required bishops in attendance, in one of their homes, since his ordination was outside the Church of England.  Read more.
Alabama has many sacred spaces, places that are often connected with the civil rights movement. For Episcopalians in our state, perhaps the most significant is at Hayneville in Lowndes County, where seminarian Jonathan Daniels was martyred in August of 1965. The Jonathan Daniels pilgrimage has become a fixture for many of us and a reminder that the equality for which he gave his life is a continuing sacrifice. There is something pro- foundly moving about going back to a sacred place and remembering that enables the pilgrim to resolve, to repent, and to carry on the work of building the beloved community.

We will walk from the Lowndes County court house to the jail and then to the site of the cash store where Jonathan was shot point blank and then back to the court house, where his murderer was found not guilty by an all-white jury. There we will have a Eucharist with the judge’s bench transformed into an altar and we will hear the names of all the Alabama martyrs read out. Lunch will be served, and there will be a panel discussion following the meal.

Epiphany, Guntersville Completes
Successful Household Goods Drive for Refugees
Beginning in 2018, the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany in Guntersville has conducted household goods drives for refugees being resettled in the United States. In prior years, with the exception of 2020 due to COVID19, the beneficiary has been Bridge Refugee Services of East Tennessee, the nearest resettlement agency to our parish.

This year we kicked off the drive on June 19, the day before World Refugee Day. We also chose the Alabama Interfaith Refugee Partnership to receive the goods. Based in Birmingham, ALIRP works with other agencies to assist in the resettlement of refugees in Alabama. To date, through their partner, Inspiritus, ALIRP has assisted in the resettlement of some sixty-nine refugees from Afghanistan.

Throughout the drive, members of our Outreach Ministry assisted by placing gifts into boxes for ease of transport.

The drive concluded on July 10. We placed the gifts around our altar (well, a portion of the donations because we had so many), blessed the contributions, and prepared them for transport to Birmingham. The drive was so successful that it required four vehicles to move all of the gifts. In addition, parishioners made donations of $250 to ALIRP.

Jim Coleman, Vestry Outreach Liaison
Last year the ECW was able to give all our seminarians $100 towards books to assist with their study and growth through the Church Periodical Club. This year they hope to double the annual CPC contribution for each seminarian.

Seminarians are usually responsible for paying for their books, and as a priest recently said, “The support from the ECW for my books was very helpful.”

Thank you for supporting this wonderful ministry. You can make a donation here, or mail a check payable to: ECW, Diocese of Alabama, "For CPC" in the memo line. Mail to: ECW, Carpenter House, 521 N 20th Street, Birmingham, AL 35203.
