Welcome fall! Special programs are on the calendar again and the Book Groups and the Knitting Group are gearing up. President's Message

     by Dinah Wolff, President

Profits from June’s Annual Book & Plant Sale have again surpassed those from past years; interestingly, primarily through the efforts of Sally Hockenbury, plant sales have dominated for the second year.

Conducting the book sale without the shelter of the huge tent formerly loaned to YPL by the Sheriff’s Department has made it challenging to plan ahead for the large sales we had in the past (pre-2019). Weather is always a consideration.

However, fine weather prevailed. That day was sunny (like so many this summer, as we experience a record-breaking drought). Thanks to all the volunteers who helped move books and plants; we especially appreciate the assistance of the Camp Wingate*Kirkland counselors, who energetically transferred many boxes from their cellar storage to the main floor of the library.

Jean O’Toole chaired YPL’s participation in this year’s Hydrangea Festival, ably organizing and scheduling volunteers despite a trip abroad during the last weeks before the July event.

We are grateful to the four Yarmouth Port residents who opened their gardens to benefit the library, and also to those volunteers who sat at these gardens accepting admission fees, a pleasant way to spend two hours.

We joined in this Cape-wide event for the second year, and did so well that it seems as though this will be an annual YPL fundraiser, if we’re able to line up willing garden owners, who spend extra time making the perfect even better. We so appreciate all of you.

Administrative Director’s & Children's Librarian Report

by Carrie Bearse, Administrative Director & Children's Librarian

Thank goodness fall is just around the corner. Thank goodness for cooler weather, diminished traffic, dinner on the weekends without a reservation, and all that fall brings to Cape Cod. September and October are truly my favorite months on the Cape, and the visitors who arrive during this time appreciate the calmness and the fabulous weather, and get to experience the best of the Cape just like we do.

That being said, it was a wonderful summer at YPL, full of children and families in the Thacher Room and many summer friends taking advantage of the cool, quiet library environment. We enjoyed seeing and serving you all.

With the added responsibilities of Administrative Director tacked on to my Children’s Librarian duties, I find that I am spending a bit more time behind my desk instead of behind the circulation desk, which is bittersweet. I miss greeting everyone and catching up on local news and on what you are reading. So, if I am not out front and you have a minute, pop your head around the office corner and say “Hi”. I would be ever so thankful for the chance to see you. As I have said many times, our patrons make this library so very special. You are very much appreciated!

And speaking about what you are reading, thank goodness for Susan Saposnik. Although Susan has been a volunteer longer than I have been at YPL, the opportunity to work with her for two days each week in her new role as Circulation Assistant, has really made me appreciate her even more! I know people who have time to read books, I know people who do a lot of other things and still have time to read books…neither category applies to me. Susan, on the other hand, reads, teaches piano and trumpet, reads, plays the organ and piano at local churches, reads, gardens, reads, plays the French horn in a local orchestra, and READS! She not only reads many, many books but remembers the authors, characters, plots, and what she liked or didn’t like about ALL of the books she has read. She has quickly become the “go to” staff member when a patron needs a recommendation about what to read next and what to read after that…gosh! Thank goodness for Susan!

So welcome fall, welcome the best season on Cape Cod, and always be thankful!

From the Thacher Children’s Room:

All is fun and games and reading in the Children’s Room. Please stop by this fall and plan to stay awhile and enjoy all we have to offer.

We will continue all of our current children’s activities throughout the fall. Please check our website and our monthly happenings newsletter for the most up-to-date information.

YPL is a great place for kids! Hope to see you soon!

“A public library,

privately financed”

YPL is a privately funded, public library and operates exactly like the other two Yarmouth libraries (South and West).

Library services are funded by your membership contributions and donations.

If you are interested in volunteering, please call the library.

Click here for a list of 2022 Membership Campaign Contributors.

Why do we have a Membership Campaign?

Since June 30, 2009 all but a token amount of our funding has come from private and not governmental sources—as it did for the first 72 years of the library's existence.

We otherwise continue to fulfill our historic mission as a public library, open to all residents of the town and to the broader Cape community as well.

ALL are welcome!

A Book Sale Corner and Book Donations

Guidelines for Donations:

As we have very limited space for receiving and sorting book donations, for now, we are accepting only 2018 to 2022 titles, books about Cape Cod and its history, and children’s books for our ongoing book sale in the “Under Spiral Staircase” corner.

Thanks to generous patrons, we have been able to stock our sale shelves with current titles, and also add popular 2022 titles to our collection, which helps the book budget.

Please watch our website and future Yardarms for changes in our donation policy, and for forthcoming sales.
