by Les Peat, Membership Campaign Chair
As a result of the generosity of our patrons, the 2023 Membership Campaign exceeded the goal of $40,000 for the first time since 2019. On behalf of the Trustees, Corporators, and staff, thanks to all who participated.
And by now you should have received, or soon will receive, membership information for calendar year 2024. Once again, our goal is $40,000, and as usual, the purpose is to avoid having to dip into endowment principal to cover expenditures that are neither for ordinary operations nor eligible for reimbursement from sources such as Community Preservation funds. (One such project that might be undertaken in 2024 is updating the look of the main reading room, which is currently anchored firmly in the 1950s.)
In addition, there are always unbudgeted repairs to be accounted for. We therefore ask that you make every effort to join if you are not yet a member, to renew at your current level if you are a member, and if possible, to consider moving up to a higher level of membership.
How to contribute: If you receive a solicitation in the mail, please use the enclosed return envelope to make your contribution. Otherwise click here to download a form. However you choose to contribute, we will be grateful for your support.

Administrative Director’s & Children's Librarian Report
by Carrie Bearse, Administrative Director & Children's Librarian
Although each new day is a reason to be thankful, it seems at this time of year, and especially in a world full of political and social turmoil, that it is ever more important to be thankful — thankful for family, friends, and community. Part of that community, actually a very significant part of it for me, is the Yarmouth Port Library…our patrons, my co-workers, our committed volunteers, the Board of Trustees and Corporators, and everyone who happens to stop in to sit by the fire, ask for directions, etc. It is always so easy to be kind and thankful for each member of this library’s “community.”
My response to our amazing patrons — who drop off candy to supplement our supply at the counter (you know who you are!), who apologize for a book being late, who are so appreciative of book and movie suggestions, who enthusiastically attend our programs and book groups, who routinely (and with smiles!) engage and participate in our storytimes and our children’s activities — is always a very big and sincere thank you! Thank you for making all of us — the staff and our volunteers — feel appreciated, and for making YPL such a very special part of our community.
While expressing appreciation, I will also say that I am extremely thankful for my family…my boys, Maxwell and Simon, my fabulous and handsome dog George, my spunky cat Mister Mittens, and everyone in my “personal community” who makes me feel special and loved. Enjoy this winter holiday season, and hopefully in all the hustle and bustle we can all make time to be thankful.

Under the Spiral Staircase Sale
For a selection of “almost new” 2019 to 2023 titles: Bestsellers, children’s books, gardening books, cookbooks, and more. We add new titles weekly with donations from our generous patrons.
Check the Book Sale the next time you are at the library. We continue to accept 2019-2023 titles for our sales shelf during regular library hours.
Summer Book Sale Donations to Resume in January
While the library has continued to receive donations of newer books for its ongoing sale in the Spiral Staircase area, we had suspended larger donations of older books. We expect to resume receiving those donations in January, on Monday afternoons from 1 to 3 PM, starting on January 8th.
Use the East Side Door. For times other than Mondays from
1-3 PM, please call YPL at 508-362-3717 to make an appointment.
To avoid repeated trips to the recycling containers at the town dump, we ask that people try to follow the guidelines we set up last year. Briefly, we welcome children’s and adult’s books in reasonably good condition (no damage, soil, mildew); please don’t bring clearly outdated non-fiction on subjects such as finance, travel guides, medical or technical books, etc. No encyclopedias or textbooks. New England and Cape Cod history is always appreciated.

Knitting Group — Just in Time for the Holidays!
Library knitters will again be selling small hand-crafted items, such as hats, mittens, socks, and scarves, and an occasional sweater, to benefit the Library. Hand knit baby things, cuddly creatures, novelty items, and tree ornaments are welcomed as well.
Now in its eleventh year, this sale has increased in popularity, so in addition to the efforts of the library’s Knitting Group, we welcome donations from anyone in the community.
If you’re interested in participating, please bring your hand knit contributions to the library, and give them to anyone behind the Circulation Desk.
| |
We ask that you label your items with your name, size, yarn content, and any relevant washing instructions, and thank you in advance for helping to support our library.
The library’s Knitting Group meets on 1st and 3rd Mondays at 9:30 AM in the Reading Room, and welcomes knitters of all levels. For information, contact Dinah Wolff at 362-7660 or by email at dg.wolff@gmail.com.

By now, most everyone has noticed something new in YPL’s front yard – it now has a sign, believed to be the first in its 157 year history (the super-subtle LIBRARY lettering above the entrance deemed insignificantly noticeable).
Why now? Why not? Aside from displaying our Main Street address number for newcomers and deliveries, it affirms our presence in the village, and furthermore, provides notice that our library is open to all. We’ve received nothing but positive comments, and wonder why we waited so long?
| |
The YPL program committee would like to know how many patrons would be interested in attending a six-session genealogy course, presented by the Cape Cod Genealogical Society, at a cost of $30 for six sessions. Each session includes time for individual consultation with a genealogist.
Please contact laltman@clamsnet.org for further information.
