I want to thank all of you out there who support the library as volunteers, and to those who contribute to our Annual Membership Drive, enabling us to survive…
by Dinah Wolff, President
Those who notice the Route 6A sign board in front of the library will have seen that we are pretty much back to normal pre-Covid program levels, though with sensible precautions, such as fewer attendees, spacing of seating, and masking recommendations where appropriate.
That was the case with the Spaghetti Supper at Jack’s Outback II, chaired this year by Susan Kiehnau. Our volunteer waitstaff wore masks to serve a reduced group of diners, and in addition, offered take-out spaghetti dinners; there were actually favorable comments about less noise and less crowded seating.
After last year’s shut-down, owner Dona Baratta was eager to return to this traditional event, and facilitated the take-out process in order that YPL might reach its usual goal in spite of fewer dine-in ticket sales.
Every year, Dona opens this popular local restaurant for our event, donating her space and a delicious spaghetti dinner (five versions!) for the benefit of the library. Volunteer Board members and community patrons wait tables, bake desserts, and handle the post-event cleanup. Huge thanks go to John Shea, who has washed dishes for both seatings for years. Visit Jack’s at 161 Route 6A, at the rear of the parking lot.
The Northside String Band performed patriotic music in honor of Veterans' Day on November 11th. And of course, there is the popular Christmas Stroll on Sunday, December 5, where volunteer bakers offer a huge variety of goodies. Use your visit to YPL to appreciate the unique interior of this 1870 building we all work so hard to preserve.
Jean O’Toole ably managed our Spring Bulb Sale, which was so successful that we questioned the total she reported. This year, she has added a holiday option, an Amaryllis & Paper White Bulb Sale; more info is below and is at: YarmouthPortLibraryfpfundraising.com
I want to thank all of you out there who support the library as volunteers, and also those who contribute to our Annual Membership Drive, enabling us to survive; although we are open to the public, the library is not supported by the Town of Yarmouth (other than by its nominal fee of $500 in return for its use of our statistics).
Please watch for our letter in early December — your donations are what keep us going.

Just in Time for the Holidays!
Hand knit items
for sale.
The library's knitters are once again selling small hand-crafted items, such as hats, mittens, socks, and scarves, to benefit the library. Hand knit baby things, cuddly creatures, novelty items, and tree ornaments are welcomed as well. Now in its ninth year, this sale has increased in popularity, so in addition to the efforts of the library’s Knitting Group, we welcome donations from anyone in the community.
If you’re interested in participating, please bring your hand knit contributions to the library, and give them to anyone behind the Circulation Desk.
We ask that you label your items with your name, size, yarn content, and any relevant washing instructions, and thank you in advance for helping to support our library.
The library’s Knitting Group meets on 1st and 3rd Mondays at 9:30 AM in the Reading Room, and welcomes knitters of all levels. For information, contact Dinah Wolff at 362-7660 or by email at dg.wolff@gmail.com

UPDATE
BOOK DONATIONS
At this time we are not accepting general book donations. Since we have not been able to have our usual book sales, unfortunately we do not have room to store more donations.
We are happy to accept only 2019 — 2021 titles to sell in our library bookstore. Some popular 2021 books can also be placed into circulation.
We hope to plan a book sale later this winter and then resume accepting general donations. Plan to visit the Under the Spiral Staircase Bookstore!
Thanks to book donations from our generous patrons, we have many 2019, 2020, and 2021 bestsellers for sale for $3.00 to $5.00.

YPL — Your community library…
and we are always glad you came!
|
|
by Leslie Altman, Librarian
Sometimes you want to go
Where everybody knows your name
And they're always glad you came
That refrain describes the Yarmouth Port Library. We want to know your name so we can greet you when you arrive. The library is celebrating its 158th birthday in 2022. We may not be the oldest building used as a library nor the oldest library established on Cape Cod, but we have been friendly and welcoming for over a century.
We are happy to provide you with news from local and national newspapers; the latest magazines to browse; the best in books, television, video, and recorded music; the chance to search for your ancestors on one of our public computers; opportunities to meet other families to play in the children’s room and listen to story time — or listen to chapter one of a book another patron liked--and much more.
We don’t intend to stop here, however. Once again we are beginning the process of self-evaluation so that we can plan for the future. Some of you may have found a survey enclosed with your items at checkout. Thank you for getting those back to us. These small surveys are the first step in outlining our plans for the next three to five years. If you are interested in being part of the planning process, please let us know, so that as we form a committee or host a discussion, your voice can be heard.
One of my favorite tasks is planning adult programs with the program committee. We have some special events coming up this winter that you may enjoy. Yarmouth Port and Cape Cod are home to many accomplished people, and we are delighted that we will be hosting some unique programs this year. In January, for example, local art historian Mary Woodward will talk about the history of color in painting. Another upcoming event for the Book Group: an author visit by Lauren Wolk. Look for a list of programs elsewhere in The Yardarm. You can also check the website for dates and times.
As you know, we have monthly Knitting Group and Book Group meetings, but we are always open to other groups who might like to meet in the library. If anyone would like to start a group — crafting or memoir writing or photography or something we haven’t thought of — please let us know how we can help you make it happen.
For the benefit of Cape and Islands Veterans Outreach Center, the Yarmouth Port Library is selling holiday cards by Marieluise Hutchinson, with a print of one of her unique winter landscapes. The cards are donated by the painter herself, who is a long-time patron of the YPL, and all proceeds go to the Outreach Center. Look for them at the library.
Warm wishes to you all for a happy winter ahead, a happy holiday season, and some good books to read or listen to. And not to put too fine a point on it, Cheers!

A bustling Children’s Room
|
|
by Carrie Bearse, Assistant Librarian/Children’s Services
The children’s room is beginning to bustle, again! We have had more families coming into YPL over the summer and early fall, a sure sign that our world is becoming more comfortable and manageable, thank goodness! And honestly, what better place to spend these upcoming chilly afterschool afternoons — as a reminder, the library is open until 6 PM on Thursdays and it is a wonderful and quiet time to visit!
Our children’s room is stocked with a fabulous selection of picture books, juvenile fiction, DVDs, and nonfiction books and more to peak any interest. We also have a great selection of toys to keep everyone entertained! Playmobil (my favorite!), Legos (for little and big kids), a train set, two little ride-ons, a globe for world travelers to explore, and so much more!
We are now holding Storytime inside on Thursdays at 11 AM (with a repeat of Thursday’s program each Friday at 11 AM, too). Storytime is appropriate for ages 2 to 5, and we always sing a few songs and have a take-away craft along with reading some fun books.
Lego Afternoons on Thursdays from 3 to 5 PM for ages 6 and up has been in full swing since the summer. Come in and look at all of the creations on display and use your imagination to build your own!
And on the first Thursday of each month at 5 PM, we have our Big Stories program for creative readers and listeners ages 8 and up. Come join us! We will be reading thought-provoking fiction and nonfiction selections followed by discussion. Registration required. As always, any programming suggestions are most welcome, please call the library or send me an email at cbearse@clamsnet.org.
I have mentioned this before, but it continues to be an absolute pleasure getting to know all of you — patrons, volunteers, and families. As the staff member who has the pleasure of being here every day the library is open, I am so happy to welcome you to the library each day. I love hearing your stories, helping you select or order books, assisting with the public computers, and just being a part of the fabulous community that is Yarmouth Port Library!
I would be remiss if I did not single out our fabulous volunteers here at YPL for praise and appreciation. This group, young and older, new and long-time (and which now includes the most amazing young reader who shelves books in our children’s section each week — our youngest volunteer at the age of 12!) is simply amazing and I am so very grateful for all they do!
Wishing you all the best during this festive season and the new year! Happy reading!

2022 YPL MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN
|
|
by Les Peat, Treasurer and Chair,
Membership Campaign
Once again, it’s that time of year when we ask our patrons to show their appreciation of the library by contributing to its annual Membership Campaign.
Let me begin by expressing the appreciation of the Trustees, Corporators, and staff for the extraordinary support we received in the 2021 campaign, when we exceeded our reduced goal and very nearly reached our traditional goal of $40,000 – this in a time of continuing uncertainty brought about by the Covid pandemic.
As a result of your generosity (and the performance of the financial markets), we are emerging from the Covid crisis relatively unscathed.
That said, our needs for your continuing support have not diminished. The operating budget continues to grow and in the next year will exceed $170,000 as salaries and the cost of goods and services increase.
As expenses have grown over the ten-plus years of membership campaigns, we have resisted increasing the dollar amounts for each level of membership, and we will resist an increase for as long as we can, but we would remind you that additional gifts, whether $5 or $10 from an Individual or several hundred from a Founders’ Circle member, are always welcome and are a great help in meeting our obligations.
We would also remind you that memberships are for the calendar year. Membership contributions received between July 1, 2021 and June 30, 2022 are applied to 2022; gifts received after June 30th will be applied to 2023.
If you are ever in doubt as to whether you have already paid for 2022, please don’t hesitate to ask us to check our records by calling me at 508-362-7660 or sending an email to wl.peat@gmail.com
Membership letters will be going out soon to all past, present, and (we hope) future members of the library; return envelopes will be enclosed for your convenience. If for some reason you do not receive the mailing, please click on this link to download a form.
