Two YPL summer events are coming up — the annual Book and Plant Sale, Saturday, June 28th, and the Cape Cod Hydrangea Festival, Thursday, July 17th. These are both major fundraisers for the library. Details for both events are below and on the website. Also, please note that the 2025 Membership Campaign is coming to a close on June 30th. If you haven't already made a gift, please consider doing so at this time. And, for your convenience, you can now donate right online! Make sure to visit the library this summer to pickup those "beach reads!"

At our program during Women’s History month, the speaker mentioned that the invention of the modern bicycle (two wheels of equal size) was hailed as a turning point for women’s independence. It allowed women to travel freely (albeit limited distances) and led to less restrictive clothing in order to ride more comfortably. I had not heard this aspect of women’s history and was very intrigued.
Throughout my “personal” history, I have always felt that I was freest and most at peace when I was riding my bike. Growing up in central Illinois, on weekend and afterschool afternoons but especially throughout the summer, I would just get on my bike (a dark green single speed Schwinn) and ride and ride — by the corn and soybean fields, through local neighborhoods, over the railroad tracks to a small town near my house — my bike really was the best way to escape and explore on my own. My old Schwinn unfortunately went the way of the junk man when my parents moved to Florida when I was living in New York City with limited space to store it; or enough guts to ride it on the city streets. When marriage brought me to Cape Cod, one of the first things I did was buy a bicycle. The salesperson kept trying to convince me to upgrade to a 3 or 5 speed model, but I insisted on a single speed Schwinn, this time in cranberry red, which I thought very appropriate. As soon as weather permits, I pull my bike out of the shed, pump up its tires, and head out. I ride all over, throughout Barnstable Village and I even make it down to Yarmouth Port on occasion.
So where is all of this heading? The point is triple fold…first, we have some wonderful and enlightening programs here at YPL. Although on hiatus in June, July and August, programming will resume in the early fall, so do plan to join us and garner your own new tidbits of wisdom. Second, summer is a special time, make time for yourself. Make time to stop by the library to grab a book to read at the beach or on your porch. Visit us to cool off in the reading room, to take a break from the inevitable traffic and endless activities of summer. Do whatever you need to do to provide yourself with space, pleasure, and the freedom to enjoy your surroundings this summer…talk about liberation! You could even ride your bike to the library, if so, there may be a Schwinn in the bike rack already! And finally, speaking of independence and celebration, my bike turns 35 this summer, but more importantly, please mark your calendar for our Sweet 16! Celebration on August 16th in our backyard. We will be celebrating sixteen years as an independent, member-supported public library open to all. Thank you for sustaining us, for making this library a vibrant part of our community.

ATTENTION LIBRARY GARDENERS!
Plants — named and labeled sun or shade — are needed for the library plant sale.
Gently used gardening items — tools, planters, decor, etc. may also be donated.
Please deliver plants to the library on June 26th and 27th.
Sally Hockenbury is happy to come by if you need help digging up and potting plants. She will care for them in her garden until the sale. If you are digging up your own plants early, she can also care for them until the sale.
Please contact her to arrange to dig up plants; deliver yours to her house or have her pick them up.

Book Donations Information
We are happy to receive your used 2020 - 2025 titles to sell in our “Under the Spiral Staircase Book Sale.” Some popular 2025 titles can also be added to our library collection.
As for larger donations, please bring them to the library on Mondays from 1-3 PM, and use the east-side door. Prior to our book sale on June 28th, the last day for large donations will be June 16th, to allow us to organize our inventory. Thanks in advance for not waiting until the last minute!

Tickets: Tickets can be purchased at YPL for $5 each, four gardens for $20 or at the garden entrances on July 17th.

Raffle Tickets: A Taste of Yarmouth Port
Raffle tickets are available for $2 each or three for $5. This year's theme is a Taste of Yarmouth Port.
Each ticket will have a chance to win one of three gift baskets (valued over $75 each), which include gift certificates to local restaurants.

Reading Room Puzzle
There is a jigsaw puzzle to work on in the reading room. Whenever you stop in, take a minute or two or ten (it can be pleasantly addictive!) to help complete the puzzle. A big thank you to Christine Huggins for our puzzle mat, which allows us to move the puzzle as needed.
Note: There are a chess set, Scrabble board, cribbage set, and checkers set in the Reading Room for the pleasure of our patrons.

Watch for the June 2nd launch of our annual library fundraiser — the Fall Bulb Sale. The selection of bulbs for purchase will be as diverse and extensive as in years past.
This is one of the easiest ways to enhance the beauty of your garden and if you’re new to gardening, you can count on success because all the bulbs are high quality and guaranteed to grow.
The library receives 50% from every bulb purchase. We are incredibly grateful for our patron’s past support of this fundraiser and we hope we can count on you again this year. As a privately-funded public library, YPL receives only a token $500 from the Town of Yarmouth. Aside from responding to our annual Membership Campaign, alternative ways to donate include bequests, gifts of securities, employer matching contributions, charitable gift annuities or a gift of stocks or bonds. (And remember, you can now donate online!)
The fiscal year for the Membership Campaign drive ends on June 30th. If you haven’t already made a gift we hope you will consider doing so at this time. Maintaining the Yarmouth Port Library's operations is only possible through the generous support of our patrons.
