Yarmouth Port Library...Where you find more than just books for readers young and old.

Welcome to warm weather and to all those "lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer" on Cape Cod! And don't forget, YPL has all the latest "beach reads." Looking forward, mark your calendars for the library's Annual Book and Plant Sale and the Hydrangea Festival (see below for details) — major fundraisers for YPL. In addition, Miss Carrie has planned many fun children's activities — pirates just might be landing ashore and searching for buried treasures at YPL - ARRGH. But don't worry, nobody will be walking the plank! Hope to see you this summer at YPL - your community library.

President's Message

    by Brian Dudley, President

Libraries serve as centers for lifelong learning and enrichment, and at YPL we take that responsibility seriously. Traditionally, we have fulfilled that function through print media and our programs. However, as the world is evolving to electronic media so has our library evolved with offerings from Libby, Hoopla, and ASPEN. Additionally, we subscribe to Ancestry.com which is available to all patrons on YPL’s computers and supplements our valuable on-site genealogical resources.

Even in the face of our embrace of e-delivery, as I have visited other libraries here and across the country, it seems that libraries need to expand beyond traditional offerings. To that end, YPL is beginning to develop a strategic plan which aspires to address short-, intermediate-, and long-term needs. As Corporators, Trustees, and Staff, we have our own ideas, but those can be limited by our perspectives and experience.

In order to truly serve the community as a whole, we need input from our patrons. We have recently added a Student Representative to our Corporation, and she has already presented new ideas that I believe will attract more young people to YPL. In that spirit, I would ask, what are the things you would like to see at YPL? How can we best serve you now and in the future?

There will be more said about this effort as we progress, but if you have ideas of your own, please let the staff know and they can put you in touch with members of the Board so that you can be heard.

If you’re interested in a more active role in formulating our strategic plan, we would be glad to welcome you to the planning effort. This can be an exciting time to help guide YPL towards a relevant and sustainable future.

As always, thanks to our staff, Carrie, Carol, Susan, and Leslie and all our volunteers for the wonderful job they do to serve us all.

Administrative Director’s & Children's Librarian Report

by Carrie Bearse, Administrative Director & Children's Librarian

I love my morning routine at the library: turning on the lights and computers, tidying up the children’s room, filling the candy bowl, unloading the book drop, laying out the papers and hanging the flag. When the flag is out, the library is open! Every once in a while, a patron will rather sheepishly come in before our 10 AM opening time and be thrilled that they are welcomed despite the time. On one such occasion recently, a patron came in and said, “I can tell this is your happy place.” Indeed, it is.

It seems that every Yardarm article I write focuses on how much I love my job, and rightfully so! I feel very comfortable here at YPL. The library patrons are the best, our visitors are charmed by this historic building, I get to read books and sing songs every Thursday morning to a fun group of children, I have professional and caring co-workers, I work with a wonderful and committed group of volunteers, and I receive direction along with appreciation from an intelligent and thoughtful Board of Trustees and library Corporators.

As with all aspects of life and work, there are a few glitches and difficult situations that may crop up, when you have to step back, smile, clarify or apologize (and on occasion, do all four); but basically, the routine here at the library is peaceful and comfortable.

So, yes, this is my happy place even though my dog, George, and I often head up to Maine (my other happy place!) for little respites throughout the year. And even though there are a few places I would still like to run off to, such as revisiting Paris and London, heading down to Bermuda again or going to Switzerland to see my son, Simon, this library, the caring Yarmouth Port community, and of course, my sweet little village of Barnstable are, for the most part, all I really need.

Thank you all for being a part of this warm and welcoming Yarmouth Port Library community. And if you happen to be here on a Thursday morning around 11 AM during storytime, you may hear us singing “If You’re Happy and You Know It” … I will be the one clapping my hands, stomping my feet, and shouting “Hurrah!” the loudest. I am in my happy place.

Enjoy the summer and please visit us often.

Did you know?

Did you know that YPL is a privately funded, public library.

Since June 30, 2009 all but a token amount of our funding has come from private and not governmental sources—as it did for the first 72 years of the library's existence. We otherwise continue to fulfill our historic mission as a public library, open to all residents of the town and to the broader Cape community as well.
